Craver, Ph.D., professor emeritus of English died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at Mount Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Yadkin County to the late Roy H. Craver and Fairy Carter Craver. Dr. Craver received his B.S. in 1956 from Wake Forest College; his M.A. in 1959 from Duke University; and his Doctorate of Philosophy on May 14, 1972, from George Washington University, where he gave his dissertation on Hawthorne' s short fiction. He began his teaching career with the University of Cincinnati at age 23. Then at age 26, he went to Towson Sate College, now Towson State University, where he retired with 31 years of service, scholarship and teaching. Dr. Craver served on the Academic Standards Committee for 25 years and co-chaired the University Assessment Council, which set up guidelines for accessing majors and general university requirements. His specialty was American literature, and he admitted that of the 25 courses he taught ov! er the years, he liked teaching the American short story best. He was an old-fashioned teacher, and his classes were a mixture of lecture and discussion. Dr. Craver believed that you were wasting students' time if they did not leave the classroom knowing more than they would have, had they spent the time at the library. In addition to his parents, Dr. Craver was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy C. and Ray Howell. Surviving are his devoted friend, John P. Berkenstock of Timonium; beloved nieces Janice H. (Hugh) Holcomb of Boonville and Vickie H. (Larry) Wood of Yadkinville; great-niece Dawn H. (Ken) Cheek of Yadkinville; stepgreat-nephew Chris (Latisha) Wood of Yadkinville; great-great-nieces Megan Cheek and Morgan Cheek, both of Yadkinville; stepgreat-great-nephew Michael Wood of Yadkinville; and his dear cousin, Ruth Ann Crater. A private graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 22, at Courtney Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Jim Mart! in officiating. A memorial service will be held at Towson Stat! e Univer sity in Towson at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials, contributions or gifts may be made to Towson State University Foundation, Donald H. Craver Writers Fund No. 40153, 8000 York Road, Towson, MD 21252.
