He was born in Yadkin County on November 16, 1924 to Robert S. and Ila Hennings Smitherman. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Smitherman served in the US Army during World War II, retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 33 years, and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Teresa Jean Smitherman, brothers, R.B. Smitherman, Willie Smitherman, Jack Smitherman, Johnny Smitherman, and, Howard Gray Smitherman. Surviving are his wife, Aggie Speer Smitherman of the home; a sister, Betty Collins of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 2:00 P.M., at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cathy Turman and the Rev. Janet Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Stony Knoll United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 6:00 P.M.! until 8:00 P.M., at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 1267, 208 N. Jackson Street, Yadkinville, NC 27055 or to the Stonky Knoll Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Mel Speas, 1837 Butner Mill Road, East Bend, NC 27018. The family would like to thank Mountain Valley Hospice for the care and support they received during Mr. Smitherman' s illness.
