He was born in Burke County near Morganton to the late Elam Bertsie and Ella Kincaid Hood on May 20, 1910. He attended local schools in Burke County and graduated from Startown High School near Newton in Catawba County. He received his bachelor of science degree from N.C. State College (University) in 1932. He began his career with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Davidson County where he designed and oversaw conservation projects. In 1935, he joined the newly created Soil Conservation Service, U.S.D.A. He worked in various locations before being named district conservationist for Yadkin, Surry, Stokes and Forsyth Counties in 1938, headquartered in Yadkinville. During his career, he served in various capacities including soil surveyor, agronomist and soil conservationist until his retirement in 1971. Aft! er retirement, he remained active through service to the town of Yadkinville as a member and chairman of the planning board and town commissioner. He was a member of Yadkinville United Methodist Church since 1938. He was also a member of Yadkinville Sertoma Club and Yadkin Masonic Lodge No. 162 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed reading and learning and most outdoor activities especially gardening. During World War II, he was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division where he first served in North Africa and Sicily as a reconnaissance officer in the 67th Armored Regiment and later was assigned to 2nd Armored Division Headquarters, Combat Command "B" where he served as an operations and liaison officer during the following campaigns: Sicily, Normandy (D 3), North France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his meritorious service and action during the St. Lo Breakthrough in July 1944. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hood was also preceded in death! by his five sisters, Virgie Hood, Bertsie Hood, Lucille Hood McGimsey , Lizzie Hood James and Grace Hood Wilfong; and two brothers, Walter Hood and Clarence Hood. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Logene Caudill Hood, of the home; a son, William B. Hood and wife, Betsy of Raleigh; and two grandsons, David A. Hood, and wife, Lauren and Benjamin W. Hood, all of Raleigh. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Yadkinville United Methodist Church by the Revs. Scott Osterberg and Richard Eskew. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the sanctuary of the church. Burial will follow the visitation at Yadkin Memorial Gardens.
