He was born Nov. 9, 1915, in Yadkin County to Charles G. and Hattie Long Reavis. His mother died at an early age and he was raised by stepmother, Hattie Key Reavis. Mr. Reavis left Yadkin County and went to Panama in 1941 to work on the Trans Panamanian Highway that was critical to the war effort. When the highway was completed, he returned to the United States and joined the Army where he served in the Pacific Theater in three different combat zones and in occupied Japan at the end of World War II. After the war, he returned to Winston-Salem where he was employed by R.J. Reynolds as an industrial engineer until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Reavis was an active member of Centenary Methodist Church while he was a resident of Winston-Salem and First Christian Church in King after his retirement. He was preceded in death by wives, Macy Mechum Reavis and Ethel Key Calloway Reavis; sister, Edna Dellinger; brothers,! H. Gray Reavis and Clyde G. Reavis. He is survived by Judy Calloway Watts, Wendy Watts Frye and husband Gary, and Kristin Frye all of King; sister, Evelyn Brann of East Bend; brother, Charles G. Reavis Jr. and wife Peggy of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law, Marie Reavis of Yadkinville; special friends, Patti and Wayne Purgason of Bethania. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 14, at Slate Funeral Home in King with Lamar Tillman and Glenn VanMeter, ministers, officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Burial with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at First Christian Church Cemetery in King. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Nancy Hackett, Clea Winphrie, and the Hospice staff that served Mr. Reavis during his illness. Published in the Winston-Salem Journal on 1/14/2008.
