He was born in Yadkin County on Nov. 11, 1923, to Robert Winfield and Nola Wall Matthews. Mr. Matthews was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and was retired from J.G. Messick and Sons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II serving in the China, Burma and India Theater. Mr. Matthews, along with his parents, was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Juanita Reid Matthews; a brother, Bobby N. Matthews; two sisters, Betty M. Vestal and Frances "Sissy" Hobson; and a grandchild, Jacob Andrew Matthews. Surviving are four children, Gale (Kimberly) Matthews of Yadkinville; Sue (Mitch) Long of East Bend; Lee (Shirley) Matthews of Winston-Salem; and Ray Matthews of Charlotte and longtime girlfriend Carroll Spinks of Walnut Cove; two sisters, Katie (Gerdie) Davis and Barbara "Polly" Mcknight, both of East Bend; three brothers, Junior ! Matthews, Lovell (Rosa) Matthews and Archie (Barbara) Matthews, all of East Bend; sister-in-law Jean Matthews of East Bend; four grandchildren, April Matthews, Josh Matthews, Leslie Long and Zachary Matthews; two great-grandchildren, Destiny Gresham and Stephanie Gresham; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Prospect United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Conforti and the Rev. George Ragsdale officiating. The body will be placed in the church for viewing at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 23, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church, c/o David Williams, 4008 Prides Road, East Bend, NC 27018. The family would like to thank Willowbrook Healthcare and a special thanks to Dr. Terry ! Hess and his staff, Dr. Sean Murphy and Stacy Bachnann, Yadkin County EMS and the nurses and staff on the Eighth Tower Pulmonary Unit at Forsyth Medical Center.
