He was born May 29, 1922, in Surry County to the late Joe and Ida Stanley Childress. Mr. Childress worked as a farmer, retired from Chatham Manufacturing with over 20 years of service and was manager of C& L U-Store-It. He was of the Baptist faith and in addition to his parents, was preceded in death by his two sisters, Collie Oliver and Vallie Reece; three brothers, Clyde Childress, Thurmond Childress and Bruce Childress; and a grandson, Senega Childress. Surviving are his beloved wife of 62 years, Esther Gregory Childress of the home; four sons, Vernon Childress of Lexington; Ronald Joe (Susan) Childress of Yadkinville; Tommy Childress of Jonesville; and Chris Childress (Dolores Taylor) of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Kim (Jeff) Rush, Robbie Childress, ! Lee Childress and Jeffery Childress; great-grandchildren Emma Evans, Wyatt Rush, Luke Rush, Lilly Rush, Dustin Childress and Amber Childress; and three sisters, Callie Branon and Agnes Ham, both of Yadkinville, and Nellie Smith of Midway. His funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville, with the Rev. Don Hudson and the Rev. Spencer King officiating. Burial will follow in Fall Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 21, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Fall Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Fall Creek Church Road, Jonesville, NC 28642. Published in the Winston-Salem Journal on 2/21/2008.
