Mr. Choplin was born Oct. 17, 1911, in Yadkin County to the late John Wesley and Amelia Blakely Choplin. He was the owner and operator of Choplin' s Grocery & Shell Station on Reynolda Road for 23 years. After retiring, he worked for College Village Supermarket for a few years. He was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church and had been a volunteer for 11 years at the Moravian Home (now Salemtowne). Mr. Choplin enjoyed playing the harmonica, banjo and guitar. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 68 years, Marie Thacker Choplin; and brothers Charlie, Howard, Hubert and J.W. Choplin. Surviving are his son, Larry (Linda) Choplin of Shalimar, Fla.; daughter Jeanette (Charlie) Allen of Kernersville; brother Augburn (Eris) Choplin of Winston-Salem; sisters Annie Pearl Hutchens of Yadkinville and Dorothy (Max) Potter of East Bend; grandchildren Jef! f Choplin and Judy Walkinshaw of Florida and Debbie (Tim) Sidden of Lexington; great-grandchildren Bethany and Megan Walkinshaw of Florida; a special sister-in-law, Elsie Abram of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Bethabara Moravian Church, with the Rev. Tripp May officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Rd. Memorials may be made to Bethabara Moravian Church, 2100 Bethabara Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Britthaven for their loving care and to special friends Martha and Dee. Published in the Winston-Salem Journal on 2/16/2008.
