He was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Forsyth County but lived most of his life in Yadkin County. He joined the Army in 1948 and was very proud of his service to his country. He was administrative clerk/typist for the Army and spent most of his enlistment in Alaska. He was a story teller extraordinaire and loved to tell tales of his days in Alaska, but he really did win a dog-sled race (we have the newspaper article to prove it!). He returned to Yadkinville and worked as a mechanic at several shops before being hired by Allis-Chalmers in the mid ' 60s. He opened his own shop in 1978 and built the current Long' s Garage in 1982. In 1953, he married Pattie Sue Adams. She survives him to cherish his memory along with their three children, sons Burge "Sonny" Lon! g, Gary and wife Linda and daughter Cynthia McGehee. He was affectionately known as Pappaw or "Pap" to his grandchildren, Michael "Mikki" McGehee and wife Tonya, Tony McGehee and wife Denise, Kortney McGehee, Nathan Long and fiancee Meghan Pendry and stepgrandchild Brealon Ashworth; his great-grandchildren, Danielle McGehee and Jaxon Corns; stepgreat-grandchildren Mark Snow and wife Crystal, Amanda Bowman and Travis Bowman; and stepgreat-great-grandchildren Kayleigh Snow, Mezmariah Gwyn and Nevaeh Gwyn. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Gentry Family Chapel, with Dr. Ken Bradstock, chaplain, and Eugene Booe officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cross Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 15, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wo! uld like to think his very special caregiver, Candy Ramey, and his phy sicians, Dr. Ismael Goco and Dr. Eugene Paschold. Special thanks also go to Donna Wilson, Dr. Ken Bradstock, chaplain, and Frieda of Hospice for all of their care and kindness. Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville is serving the Long family.
