She was born in Surry County on Aug. 9, 1927, to the late George Everette Byrd and Avy M. Alexander Byrd. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna G. Porter; a brother, Ivan Byrd. She is survived by her husband, Avery R. "Jack" Ghant of the home; a daughter, Joyce Ghant of Charlotte; a son, Gordon and Jane Ghant of Charlotte; a grandson, Patrick Ghant of Charlotte; two sisters, Jean B. Harris of Elkin, Frances (Henry) Warren of Clemmons. A graveside service was held yesterday. Memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice. Special thanks to Hospice staff and Third Floor staff at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin is serving the Ghant Family.
