Ms. Creed was born July 12, 1925, in Yadkin County to the late Herbert H. Speer and Parry Wooten Speer. She and her husband owned and operated Creed' s Grocery in Winston-Salem for 25 years. Ms. Creed was an active member and served as treasurer of Forest Hill Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She especially enjoyed going on trips with her senior citizen "Friends." She loved to work with flowers and in her vegetable garden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh C. Creed; an infant brother, Rommie W. Speer; two sisters, Lucy Pilcher and Betty Jane Marion; and a stepdaughter, Nadine Creed. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Rakes and husband James of King; sons Raleigh C. Creed of Pearland, Texas, and Gerald W. Creed of New York, N.Y.; grandsons Thurman C. Saunders and wife Sharon of Winston-Salem; Jeremy M. Creed of Houston, Texas; Benjamin L. Cr! eed and wife Rosella of Houston; Travis M. Rakes and wife Jaime of King; and James Michael Rakes and wife April of Wake Forest; sisters Esteen Hoots of Yadkinville; Vina Lee Hege of King; and Christeen Grindle of Dodson; brothers Henry Lewis Speer and wife Beulah of Groten, Vt., and Clarence Speer and wife Ruby of Winston-Salem; great-grandchildren Jason Saunders and wife Laura of Jessup, Md.; Cody and Justin Rakes of King; and Carol Smith and husband Shannon of Pinnacle; three great-great-grandchildren, Joseph and Austen Smith and Emma Grace Saunders; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Johnson Gupton and the Rev. David Wooten officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 1, at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, and memorials may be made to Forest Hill Bap! tist Church at 402 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family woul d like to express their gratitude to caregivers Justine Fairfax and Marjorie Lanier, the staff of Hospice and Palliative CareCenter and the staff at Village Care for the loving care given to Ms. Creed during her illness.
