Ted was born in Yadkin County to Blanche and Raymond VanHoy and was a graduate of West Yadkin High School class of 1954 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Ted worked for the City of Winston-Salem in the Revenue Department for 38 years, until his retirement in 1992. Ted was an avid supporter of Wake Forest Athletics, attending and cheering for hundreds of football, basketball and baseball games. He did not miss a home baseball game this year and closed out the final season at "The Hook" rooting Wake to a three-game sweep of the Duke Blue Devils just two weeks ago, launching the Deacons into the ACC Tournament. Coach Grobe of the football team heralded Ted as "Our Best Fan," as he has attended every Wake Forest home football game since the university moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. The family would like to ex! press their deep gratitude to Tal Jobe of the Wake Forest Athletics Department and are so thankful for the friendship that Ted and Tal shared. Tal' s character, attitude and brotherhood are the marks of a true gentleman, and reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of Wake Forest University"Go Deacs!" Ted was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Stokes and JoAnn Harless. Ted is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Teddy; his daughters, Angela and Lori; and four grandchildren, Luke, Helena, Anna Marie and Jacob. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at Parkway Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Ray E. Harvey officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Published in the Winston-Salem Journal from 5/25/2008 - 5/28/2008.
