A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend passed away seven years to the day after the death of his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Hughes. Dr. Hughes received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1940. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946, eventually attaining the rank of Major. While in France, Dr. Hughes met his future wife, Elizabeth Woodruff of Stillwell, Okla. when she was serving with the Red Cross. They settled in Yadkinville, where Dr. Hughes became Chief Surgeon of Hoots Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1952. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1984. In addition to his service as a physician, Dr. Hughes also served the community as a member of the Yadkin County Planning Board and as Chairman of the Yadkin County Commissioners. He was a charter member of Yadkin Sertoma Club and was recognized in 1984 for more than 30 years of service to the community. In 1996, he was voted Sertoman of the Year and in 2005, Yadkin County E.M.S. Station One was dedicated in his honor. Among the other projects that meant so much to him was working to make sure that Pilot Mountain became a state park instead of being developed privately. Dr. Hughes was instrumental in the formation of Horne Creek Living Historical Farm Project and in the creation of Camp Sertoma. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by family and in the loving care of his former colleagues at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hughes is survived by his four children, Dr. Doreen Hughes (Diane Behar), Lewis Hughes (Tina), Randolph Hughes (Cathy) and Thomas Hughes (Kathy); grandchildren, Erika, Carlisle (Valerie); Erin, Matt, Preston, and Sam; great-grandchildren, Carlisle III and Autumn Renee; his nieces, Mary Beasley (Glenn) and Justine (Rick) Blank; cousin Louemma Paxton; grand-nephews, Mark Beasley, Danny Beasley, Paul Blank and Matthew Blank; grand-niece, Maryglenn Phillips (Ernie), and great-grandnieces, Jesse Beasley and Jordan Phillips. The family received friends Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. His funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at Yadkinville United Methodist Church by Dr. Jim Hunt and the Rev. Patti Choplin. Burial followed in Yadkin Memorial Gardens with full military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff of Hoots Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to cancer research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
