He was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 9, 1922, the son of John Glenn and Sallie Hoots Allgood. After attending Mars Hill College, he served as an honor guard in the U.S. Army under General Patton in WWII. After the war, he met his future wife, Peggy Lee Renegar. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1950 with a B.S. in Animal Science, followed by a Master's in Farm Management. As an agricultural agent, the couple moved from Bryson City, to Beaufort, and Jacksonville before settling in Cary in 1957. He retired as an Associate Professor Emeritus from NCSU and as a Major from the U.S. Army Reserves. Jim leaves behind his wife and soulmate of 59 years, Peggy; and their two sons, Jim and wife Jeannette of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Greg and wife Lisa of Cincinnati, Ohio. He loved his granddaughters, Ashton and Meredith, and his daughter by choice, Teresa and husband Don Cleveland. He is survived by siblings Edsel, Sally, and Weymouth and wife Wilma. He was also loved by his Renegar in-laws, Gray, wife Avonelle, Fred, Bob and wife Jeanie. He always enjoyed being an uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend John and Sallie Allgood; in-laws, Arthur and Cora Renegar, and siblings, Fred, Clarence and Harriett. Next to his love for his family, Jim enjoyed camping with his family, playing bridge, poker, and golf, gardening, especially roses and azaleas, and dancing with Peg. Jim gave his love of the beach to his children and grandchildren. He was the best crab picker in the world! Jim taught his kids that the best we can make of ourselves is to try to do the right thing. He did a lot of things right in his life. He will be remembered as a loving, supportive husband and life partner, the world's best dad even when that meant discipline, a Christian, a Southern gentleman with a great smile and hardy handshake, and a man who always kept his word and valued people. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church Building Fund, 110 South East Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.
