He was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Yadkinville to Jesse Lee and Bertha Victoria Hinshaw Mackie. He was a birthright Quaker and a member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, and attended Yadkinville First Baptist Church. He was married to Lestine Earlene "Bill" Lawrence of Elkin on Aug. 30, 1941. He was a graduate of Yadkinville High School, 1938, and Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science, Nashville, Tenn., 1940. He became a licensed embalmer in 1941. He owned and operated Mackie-Gentry Funeral Home, Yadkinville, with his partner, Carl Gentry Jr., and retired in 1984. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of Yadkin Lodge, No. 162, A.F.&A.M., where he served as Master, Secretary for 35 years and District Depu! ty Grand Master and was a member of the Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple Shrine. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, as long as his health permitted. Grady was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Howard Lee Mackie and James Gray Mackie; and a son, Fred Martin Mackie. He is survived by his wife; sister-in-law Cassie Williams Mackie of Winston-Salem; son Andrew Lawrence Mackie of Yadkinville; daughter-in-law Angela Keith Mackie of Asheboro; grandchildren Amanda Mackie (Sean) Rambo of Wake Forest; Daniel Martin (Heather) Mackie of Charlotte; and Leslie Elizabeth Mackie of Charlotte; great-grandsons Austin Mackie Rambo and Coleman Todd Rambo of Wake Forest; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 16, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville, and the funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the same place, with the Rev. Chris Vogts and Dr. Harold Salmons leading the service. Interment will! be at Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, 1400 U.S. 421 Highway West. The family requests that memorials be made to The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565; Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 546, Yadkinville, NC 27055-0546; Yadkinville First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 668, Yadkinville, NC 27055-0668; or a charity of the donor' s choice. The family appreciates the superb medical care that Grady received from the doctors, nurses and staff at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem; Hoots Memorial Hospital, Yadkinville; and Yadkin Nursing Care Center, Yadkinville; and the daily help of Mr. and Mrs. Mackie Cockerham, Lewisville.
