He was born in Yadkin County on Dec. 25, 1937, to William Henry and Hazel Murphy Murphy. Mr. Murphy attended Stony Knoll United Methodist Church. He graduated from East Bend High School in 1957. He was a pitcher for East Bend High School baseball team, where he lettered all four years. Later on, he was a pitcher with the East Bend Food Land slow pitch softball team and played and coached for various other teams. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Korea. He worked at Hanes Hosiery until they closed and later he retired from Stroh' s Brewery. He enjoyed all types of sports with golf and slow pitch softball being his favorites. The times he spent playing golf with his friends were among his most pleasurable. He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and brother-in-law. He volunteered in the transportation department during the Cro! sby, the Vantage, and the RJR Championship golf tournaments. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Dean Murphy and Jerry Murphy. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Ruby Hennings Murphy of the home; two daughters, Jennifer (David) Phillips Jr. of East Bend, and Heather (Brent) Russell of Huntersville; a sister, Peggy (Larry) Hauser of Yadkinville; four grandchildren, Courtney and Austin Phillips and Jacob and Ethan Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today, April 5, at East Bend United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cathy Turman and Bill James, pastor, officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today, April 5. Burial will follow in Stony Knoll United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Yadkin VFW Post 10346. Memorials may be made to Stony Knoll United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Melvin Speas, 1837 Butner Mill Road, East Bend, NC 27018. A speci! al thanks to Forsyth Regional Cancer Center, Salem Chest Specialists, and Hospice and Palliative CareCenter for their care and support given to Rich and the family during his illness.
