Chapman Dinkins enlisted in Co. B, 38th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. He deserted several times and finally took the Oath of Allegiance to the Federal Government at Beruda Hundred sometime about October 13, 1864. He married Lydia Jane Bovende on September 4, 1846 in Surry County. She was the daughter of John and Rachel Brown Bovender. They had 2 children born before 1850: Amanda E, b. 1847, and Mary A., b. 1849.
