He was born in Walnut Cove to Luther O. and Mamie Fulp Williams on Aug. 23, 1930, and was a member of Pine Hall Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Pine Hall High School, then attended Oak Ridge Military Institute. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950 serving a two-year tour of duty at the U.S. Naval Radio Facility in Totsuka, Japan, and then served a four-year enlistment aboard the USS Dynamic. Bob was employed by Wachovia Bank where he began a distinguished 42-year banking career which included serving in various positions with NCNB across North Carolina. Following NCNB' s expansion into Virginia and Maryland, Bob was named president/CEO of NCNB Virginia. He was active in civic affairs in all the communities in which he lived. He was a member of the Lions Club in Winston-Salem, Roanoke Rapids, Plymouth, Yadkinville and Boone. He was also a member of Yadkin! ville Sertoma Club and Boone Kiwanis Club, serving one term as president of the Kiwanis Club. He served on the Board of Directors of Watauga County United Fund and two years as president of that organization. Bob was a charter member of the National Interscholastic Football Officials Association, the N.C. High School Athletic Officials Association and the North State Football Officials Association. He accumulated over 27 years officiating high school athletics. Bob founded the Yadkin County Midget Football League with financial backing of Yadkinville Sertoma Club, then served seven years as commissioner of the league and coached the Yadkinville Hornets for six years. His parents preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ruth Griffin Williams; a son, Gregory Kent (Gwynne) Williams; a daughter, Melinda Rae "Lynne" (Danny) Critcher; four grandchildren, Conner Joseph Williams, Gunner Griffin Williams, Zachary Hale Critcher and Dillion Luther Critcher; a brother! , James Wray Williams; a niece, Sharon W. (Keith) McMichael; and two n ephews, Douglas Webster (Rachel) Williams and Kenneth Dodson (Tonya) Williams. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be conducted today, March 6, at Pine Hall Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jeff Smith officiating. After the service, military honors will be provided by Clemmons VFW Memorial Honor Guard in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the graveside service.
