He was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Yadkin County to Isom Monroe and Bessie Simmons Brown. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. Nothing pleased him more than spending time with his great-grandsons. He loved to share memories of his heritage and life. Alvin was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. He attended Swaim' s Baptist Church for many years. He retired from the Yadkin County Sheriff' s Department where he was chief jailor for 17 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard M. Brown; sister and brother-in-law Vernice E. and Opal B. Vanhoy; half sister and brother-in-law Charles and Darlene St John; stepmother Bessie R. Brown; and brother-in-law Earl Swaim. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Mozelle Swaim Brown; children Ronnie D. and Kathy B. Ray; grandchildren Noah K. an! d Angela R. Adams and Christopher W. and Kristie R. Shugart; great-grandsons Brady R. Shugart and Blain N. Adams; his sister and brother-in-law, Gerald G. and Maxine B. Todd; half sister and brother-in-law Jimmy and Betty Brown; sister-in-law Edith R. Brown; and brothers and sisters-in-laws Doris Swaim and Dennis Spicer, Flake and Lorene Swaim and Claude and Geraldine Swaim. Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces, friends and family. The service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, at Swaim' s Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roger Groce, his friend and neighbor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 10, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Jonesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice; Swaim' s Baptist Church Cemetery Fund; or Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
