Mrs. Barber was a loving and devoted mother to her family and a talented homemaker in gardening, sewing and cooking. She was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Yadkin County to the late Jackson and Callie Swaim Groce. Mrs. Barber was a lifelong member of Swaims Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James F. "Jim" Barber, on Nov. 21, 1992; four sisters and their husbands, Sally Groce (Lewis) Weatherman, Pearl Groce (Roscoe) Campbell, Omie Groce (Doff) Cheek and Sudie Groce (Glenn) Vestal; and nine brothers and their wives, including an infant brother, Henry C. (Emma) Groce, Noah (Hattie) Groce, Solomon (Nellie) Groce, Dewey (Lill) Groce, McKinley (Aimee) Groce, Odell Groce, T.R. "Pete" (Lexie) Groce and Farmer Groce. Surviving are her two sons, Paul Gray (Lorene) Barber and Jackie L. (Jo a! nn) Barber, all of Jonesville; and two sisters-in-law, Angie Groce and Irene Groce, both of Jonesville. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Gentry Family Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Groce and the Rev. Dennis Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Swaims Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 29, at Gentry Family Funeral Service of Jonesville. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Swaims Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Swaims Church Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020. The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Elkin Health Care for all the loving care and support given to Mrs. Barber.
