She was born May 8, 1926, in Caldwell County, the daughter of the late Daniel Spurgeon Barlowe and Dollie Smith Barlowe. Betty was a devoted Christian and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Yadkinville. Betty served the Lord in three churches during her adult life, Guess Road Baptist Church in Durham; First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach; and First Baptist Church of Yadkinville. She worked with the Mission programs, sang in the choirs, and taught Sunday school through the years. She was an example of love for family and friends. Betty worked most of her career in Durham with Gold Kist Inc., and when she and her husband retired, they made the move to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Betty moved to Yadkinville to be closer to her children in 1996. Her family, neighbors and friends have always meant so much to her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ! brother, Donald Barlowe; sisters Meda Barlowe Watkins and Arlene Barlowe; and her loving husband, John Robert Holmes. A beloved mother and grandmother, Betty is survived by two children, Andy Holmes and wife Kim of Whiteville and Hannah Holmes Holyfield and husband Doug of Rockford; and five grandchildren, Solomon Holmes, Auston Holmes, Nicole Holmes, Alana Holyfield, and Ashley Holyfield. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Everette Barlowe, Marshall Barlowe, Smith Barlowe and Ellen Barlowe Steele and their families; sister-in-law Dell Barlowe; and many nephews, nieces and lifelong friends and family. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at First Baptist Church of Yadkinville. Her funeral service will follow the visitation in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, with the Rev. Chris Vogts and the Rev. Dallas Prestwood officiating. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Youngsville Cemetery in You! ngsville. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Yadkinville, in memory of Betty Holmes, P.O. Box 668, Yadkinville, NC 27055. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Holmes family. Published in the Winston-Salem Journal on 3/7/2008.
