Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Charles Truett Speer, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center Palliative Care Unit. He was born Dec. 20, 1923, to W.H. and Geneva S. Speer. He dedicated his life to serving his church and community. Mr. Speer served as Sheriff of Yadkin County from 1966 to 1974 and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1998. Mr. Speer was a veteran and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member and past commander of East Bend American Legion Post 336 and a member of Yadkin VFW Post 10346. He was a retired charter member of East Bend Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member of East Bend Ruritan Club as long as his health permitted. He served as a Boy Scout leader in the late 1950s. He was a member of Baltimore Methodist Church. He lov! ed his church and was past Sunday school superintendent, teacher and church treasurer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Irene Hatcher and Bonnie Phillips. Surviving are his wife, Zola Kelly Speer of the home; his children, Truett Kelly (Debbie) Speer of East Bend; Charles Michael (Cynthia) Speer of Yadkinville; and Sharon Speer (Steve) Gentry of Clemmons; a brother, Walter H. Speer of East Bend; and four grandchildren, Kelly Nichole Speer, Natalie Marie Speer, Charles Franklin Gentry and Emma Irene Gentry. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Baltimore United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mel Freeman and the Rev. John Brown officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites conducted by East Bend American Legion Post 336 and Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today, March 26, at Huff Funeral Home.
