He was born June 16, 1918, in Yadkin County to the late Luther and Mittie Henderson. Mr. Henderson was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with over 30 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the European Theater, serving in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland, and receiving three Bronze Stars for his bravery. He was a member of College Park Baptist Church and enjoyed time he could spend in his mountain home, as his health would allow, and was a great fisherman and enjoyed fishing with his brother. Two brothers, Elwyn and L.P. Henderson Jr.; and a sister, Madge Henderson, preceded Mr. Henderson in death. Surviving are his wife, Lona McKnight Henderson; a daughter, Karen E. Trawick Hobson (Tim), of Powhatan, Va.; granddaughter Emily Hobson; brother Bill C. Henderson (Earline) of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Vetral Owens, Margie Freeman (Leonard) and Ilene Peddycord, all of Winston-Salem; sisters-i! n-law Mary M. Day (Joe) and Lucille Henderson; brothers-in-law Ernest (Rose) McKnight, Hugh (Naydean) McKnight and Tom (Kay) McKnight; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 19, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel, with Dr. Cecil Cave and the Rev. Ramon Smith officiating. Visitation will be one hour before Mr. Henderson' s service. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Mineral Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 3733 Ogburn Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road is serving the Henderson family.
