John was born in Winston-Salem, NC August 6, 1927, son of Dr. John Claude Casstevens and Julia Esther Owens Casstevens. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lois Lyndon Casstevens. Surviving are a sister, Jane Marilyn Casstevens McNair and husband, Grover Cleveland McNair Jr.; a nephew, Grover Cleveland McNair III; two nieces, Julia Owen McNair McBride and Mary Lyndon McNair Eagle; seven great-nieces and nephews and two great-great-nieces. John grew up in Clemmons NC. At the age of 15, John graduated high school and went to college with the goal of graduating in three years. His goal was to join the military service in order to serve his country in WWII. A swimming accident prevented him from meeting this goal. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. John's caree! r spanned 40 years as a financial analyst in New York City. He especially enjoyed reading and listening to classical music. After retiring, John traveled extensively. He spent a great deal of time in Paris as well as other parts of the world. His later years were spent between San Francisco and Sarasota. As his health began to fail, John returned to Winston-Salem, where he resided at the Nissen Building. In 2008, he moved to the Fitzgerald Health Center at Arbor Acres for the remaining years of his life. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Arbor Acres for their loving care and professional support given to John and his family. Memorials in John's memory may be made to the Fitzgerald Health Center, Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to a charity of the donors choice.
