He was born in Yadkin County on February 20, 1924 to the late Jessie Alonzo and Martha Jane Edwards Childress. Mr. Childress was retired form Newman Brothers Well Drilling and a faithful member of Charity Hill Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served our country during WWII. Survivors include a daughter Kay Frances Smith; four sons and two daughters-in-law Arthur Ray and Betty Childress, Johnny Wayne Childress, Charles Edward and Rebecca Childress and Billy Joe Childress all of Thurmond; fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; a sister Darlene Childress Crouse of Wilkes County and a brother and sister-in-law, Talmage and Attie Childress of State Road. In addition to his parents, Mr. Childress was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Pauline Roberts Childress. Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday at Charity Hill Baptist Church by Rev. Brian Caldwell, Rev. Claude Lloyd, Rev. Jerry Wilmoth and Rev. Rex Walker. Burial will follow in the Crestwood Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post 123. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 8 pm Thursday March 4, 2010.
