I agree the 1900 death for Samuel H Speer posted by several family trees (also my tree for a while), and found in "Cemeteries of Yadkin County" does not correlate with census records. His mother Ruth Cain is believed to be daughter of Thomas Cain and Celia Steelman. Ruth first married Jacob Edelmann in 1791 in Surry Co, NC. Jacob died bef 1812, and Ruth married Samuel Henry Speer 9 Sep 1812 in Surry (Yadkin) County, NC. Agree, Rachel (1820-1900) was daughter of Samuel L Davis and Rachel Creson. Noted a more recent reply to your inquiry mentioned Mary Ellen Speer (1847-1930)... I believe she was daughter of Samuel Henry Speer and Rachel Davis rather than Samuel Speer and Ruth Cain who were her grandparents.
