About 135 persons, including several Confederate soldiers, were present on this his 69th birthday. A table was prepared under some large shade trees, which were arraned in such a manner as to make it seem that they had been set out on purpose for such an occasion as this. Rev William Myers, of Wilkes, an old friend and schoolmate of Mr Johnson, was the speaker of the day. When all was ready and the people had gathered around the table loaded with cakes, pies, chicken, etc,. he began in his entertaing way to congratulate Mr Johnson on the large number of friends that were present and then to give a short sketch of the family history. He said that this family of Johnsons came from Maryland, that Uncle Jackie Johnson (as he called him) had three sons, one of whom, Mr Jerry Johnson, became a minister in the M E Church, one, Mr H Johnson, father of Mr J C Johnson, was a farmer, and the other, Mr Warren Johnson, became a school teacher. Mr Myers said that Mr H Johnson, father of J C Johnson, spoke the greatest word that he had ever heard, that about fifty years ago he met him over here at the X Roads (Windsor's X Roads) and there he, Mr Johnson, spoke the words that tied him and his wife together and they never had got unfastened. After Mr Myers had finished speaking the people bowed their heads while he led them in a brief prayer. then we gathered nearer the table and begfan to unload it of some of its contents. After all had eaten, boxes containing cakes, pies, etc., were sent to some of the unfortunate ones, and we still had some to carry home for supper. A few hours were spent in social intercourse, making, altogether, a pleasant day to brighten our memory in future years. Mrs Baker, who is a daughter of John Collins, went West over 36 years ago and has not been in North Carolina since until the day before Christmas. The reunion was a very enjoyable occasion. The day was a model one, being warm and clear. The crowd began gathering in the early morning, including fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, children, grandchildren and friends, and continued until there were 114. The guests were entertained with social chat, music, vocal and instrumental, until about 1:30 pm, when a table 40 feet long and three feet wide, which had been prepared for the occasion, was filled to perfection with the good things which had been prepared for the occasion by the kind hands of those who were present. After a prayer of thanksgiving by Rev W J Wyatt dinner was served in old-fashioned picnic style, except we had plenty of good coffee and no whiskey. After dinner the young people enjoyed themselves straw-riding in a wagon drawn by four horses. When the day was far spent all departed for their respective houses, having January 1st, 1906, stamped on their memories so as never to be forgotten. "We are going to work with genealogical groups and with ancestry sites on the Internet to reach out to descendants who may have only minimal knowledge about their ancestors' lives here but would like to know more. We plan to contact these descendants and ask them to help us restore the village and then, literally, to come back home." Mrs. Casstevens, Thank you for responding. Sue Royal had helped one of my sisters with research. Land records, though it is not specifically stated, and the census would point to Benjamin Chapman, a child of John Chapman of Spotsylvania County, Virginia and half brother of Erasmus Chapman, as the father of Thomas, our ggg- grandfather. Erasmus was in Lincoln County, Tennessee in the early 1800, was involved in a murder and then left after his divorce. . In or near to 1860 , John H. Chapman, son of Thomas moved his family to Petersburg, Lincoln Co., TN. He died there in 1870. I have found John H. named in a will as running a mill and building furniture. His wife, Demaris L. Shelton, taught music in a boarding school. This we have confirmed in original letters at Duke University. Mrs. Royal had told my sister of a cemetery down the road from her house that is on farm land under cultivation . This was possibly the cemetery used by the Chapman family for the generations previous to the death of Thomas in 1859 . Thomas is buried in Mt. Sinai Methodist Cemetery as is Sarah Hill Chapman , 2 children, Allen and Mary Jane, and a grand daughter. Do you know of any stone readings that might have been done in this older cemetery or if the stones were removed to another cemetery when the field was plowed? The Brewbaker family received the Chapman estate at the death of Mary Jane , the youngest daughter of Thomas Chapman and Sarah Hill. They have shared photos and some documentation. Thank you.
