Surviving are her devoted and loving husband of 59 ½ years, Willie Jarvis Bates; children, Nancy (Alvin) Bell, Betty (Ronald) Poindexter, Thelma (Hank) Durham, Bill (April) Bates, Ralph (Tesheka) Bates, Shelby Bates; sisters, Bretta Moxley, Mary (Joe) Wagoner, Frances Corthren, JoAnn (Jack) Wagoner; brothers, Richard (Marie) Roberts, Thurmond (Barbara) Roberts; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mathis, 89, passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. He was born March 29, 1918, in Yadkin County to the late Everette and Fay Evans Mathis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Hemric Myers Mathis; a brother, Raymer Mathis; and a sister, Susie M. Murray. He was a charter member of Arlington First Baptist Church in Jonesville. On April 18, 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, Battery D, 432nd AAA-AW Battalion. He patriotically served two years and ten months of Foreign Service during World War II. That time included 16 months and two winters in the mountains of Italy. Honors for this service included the EAMET (Europe-Africa-Middle-East) medal with five stars, representing five major battles of the Italian campaign. He was wounded twice and was awarded the Purple Heart. While working in a civilian conservation corps camp, he learned masonry and developed a skill that led him! to be known as a master brick mason. He had great pride in his trade and enjoyed riding through the community admiring houses and churches he helped to build. Family and friends enjoyed his sense of humor, quick wit and talent of story-telling. He loved nature and enjoyed walking horses, gamecocks and especially training and hunting with his bird dogs as long as his health permitted. Surviving are his son, Danny Mathis of Hamptonville; a daughter, Saborah Robinson and husband Hal of Elkin; a sister, Faye Marie Mathis of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Danielle Walker and husband Dustin of Union Grove, Davis Mathis and wife Amy of Hamptonville and Abbye Blackwelder and husband Aaron of State Road; and three great-grandchildren, Holden and Hadley Walker and Addison Bradley Blackwelder. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Arlington First Baptist Church in Jonesville, with the Rev. Jerry Fugate officiating. A loving mother, wife and homemaker, Mrs. Peck was born March 18, 1951, in Forsyth County to Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Smitherman. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She retired from the Yadkin County public school system with 31 years of service. Most of her teaching career was spent as a second grade teacher at East Bend School. An avid reader with a special interest and commitment to children, Mrs. Peck frequently volunteered at the East Bend Public Library and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honor society of women educators. Mrs. Peck was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her husband, Cecil Peck; son, David Peck of East Bend; daughter, Allison Peck of Mount Pleasant, ! S.C.; her father, Dwight Smitherman of East Bend; sister, Sarah (Harry) Strawn of Opelika, Ala.; niece, Dr. Mary Alice Strawn of Birmington, Ala.; and some very special friends she treasured as family. Mitchell was an extremely giving and caring man. He was always ready to help others with kind words, actions or deeds. Mitchell was preceded in death by a wife, Gladys Marlene Reavis Stimpson; a stepson, Justin Ian Reavis; grandparents, Tom and Virginia Stimpson, William Edward and Lillian Davis; a special cousin, Samuel James (little Jimmy) Stimpson and an uncle Charlie Stimpson. She was born on June 13, 1927, to the late James Ernest Smith and Coetta Smith Norman in Yadkin County. Mrs. Linville lived all of her life in Forsyth County. She retired from Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company and was a member of Beck' s Baptist Church. Mrs. Linville was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Donald Saunders Linville on Sept. 1, 2007 after 60 years of marriage, and a sister, Gladys Hauser. She is survived by two sons, David Smith Linville and his wife, Vickie, of Winston-Salem, and Mark Steven Linville and his wife, Susan, of Walnut Cove; three granddaughters, Laura Clark and her husband, Daniel, Jennifer Linville, and Julie Linville; two brothers, Jim Smith and Don Smith. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Crestview Memorial Park by Dr. Karl Minor and Dr. Ray Hamilton. The family will receive friends this evening, December 7, from 6 to 8 p! .m. at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel. She was born August 21, 1907, in Yadkin County to William and Laura Williams Dobbins. She married Cecil H. Frye on December 22, 1928, who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Wesley Sams and five brothers and two sisters, Ella Dobbins Sutphin, Martha Dobbins Maynard, Luther, John Frank, Grady, Walter, and Austin Dobbins. She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Ruth Durham of Rural Hall, Greta (Jack) Hall of Pinnacle, Frances Farmer of Pinnacle, and Joann (Loyd) Sams of Pinnacle. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Jimmy Durham (Debbie), Cecil Anthony Durham, Rev. Mark Hall (Karen), Julie (Tim) Howard, Jack (Sonny) Farmer, Stephanie (Maury) Tepper, and Abigail (Matt) Linville; and by twelve great-grandchildren; Cassie and Clayton Durham, LaShay Hunt, Angel and Anthony Durham, Alex and Aaron H! all, Nathan and Kendra Howard, Nicholas, William, and Lily Katherine Tepper; and by three great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Annie Mae Dobbins Byerly of Winston-Salem, and Jane D. Shore of Yadkinville as well as many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Brim' s Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gerald Jones and Rev. Mark Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Mrs. Williams was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Yadkin County to the late Lee and Minnie Driver Hutchens. She was a 1952 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College. Mrs. Williams was a retired teacher from the Yadkin County school system. Betty Jo loved teaching, and especially teaching children how to read. She was a member of Pilot View Friends Meeting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Smith Williams; son, Ted Columbus Williams. Surviving are her children, Dixie Jo (Tom) Williams-Kilby, H. Smith (Goldie) Williams Jr.; grandchildren, Ethan Thomas Smith Kilby, William John Noah Kilby, Anna Kathryn Pearl Kilby, Caroline DeAnn Williams, Katey Smith Williams, Tate Columbus Williams (mother, Julie W. Groce); sisters, Hazel (Donald) Casstevens, Linda Williams; brother, Jimmy (Patty) Hutchens; sister-in-law, Kathryn W. Gaither; and ! numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at Pilot View Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Nelson Puffenbarger and the Rev. Kenny Gooden officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery.
