Mrs. Bates was born Aug. 29, 1932, in Wilkes County to the late William and Pricilla Roberts. She was a member of Gospel Chapel Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Luther Roberts, Glen Roberts, Arvil Roberts; sisters, Ella Roberts, Connie Roberts; two grandchildren; a great- grandchild; and a son-in-law. Surviving are her devoted and loving husband of 59 ½ years, Willie Jarvis Bates; children, Nancy (Alvin) Bell, Betty (Ronald) Poindexter, Thelma (Hank) Durham, Bill (April) Bates, Ralph (Tesheka) Bates, Shelby Bates; sisters, Bretta Moxley, Mary (Joe) Wagoner, Frances Corthren, JoAnn (Jack) Wagoner; brothers, Richard (Marie) Roberts, Thurmond (Barbara) Roberts; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Her funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at! Gospel Chapel Church, with the Rev. Terry Coe, the Rev. Ralph Casstevens, the Rev. Walter Phillips, and the Rev. Roy Nixon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 12, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The family would like to thank Susan with Yadkin Valley Home Health, all of the Hospice Nurses, and a special friend and caregiver, Ann Hutchens, for all of the love and care shown to Josephine during her sickness. Mathis, 89, passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. He was born March 29, 1918, in Yadkin County to the late Everette and Fay Evans Mathis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Hemric Myers Mathis; a brother, Raymer Mathis; and a sister, Susie M. Murray. He was a charter member of Arlington First Baptist Church in Jonesville. On April 18, 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, Battery D, 432nd AAA-AW Battalion. He patriotically served two years and ten months of Foreign Service during World War II. That time included 16 months and two winters in the mountains of Italy. Honors for this service included the EAMET (Europe-Africa-Middle-East) medal with five stars, representing five major battles of the Italian campaign. He was wounded twice and was awarded the Purple Heart. While working in a civilian conservation corps camp, he learned masonry and developed a skill that led him! to be known as a master brick mason. He had great pride in his trade and enjoyed riding through the community admiring houses and churches he helped to build. Family and friends enjoyed his sense of humor, quick wit and talent of story-telling. He loved nature and enjoyed walking horses, gamecocks and especially training and hunting with his bird dogs as long as his health permitted. Surviving are his son, Danny Mathis of Hamptonville; a daughter, Saborah Robinson and husband Hal of Elkin; a sister, Faye Marie Mathis of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Danielle Walker and husband Dustin of Union Grove, Davis Mathis and wife Amy of Hamptonville and Abbye Blackwelder and husband Aaron of State Road; and three great-grandchildren, Holden and Hadley Walker and Addison Bradley Blackwelder. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Arlington First Baptist Church in Jonesville, with the Rev. Jerry Fugate officiating. The family will receive friends af! ter the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Arlington F! irst Bap tist Church, 345 South Main St., Jonesville, NC 28642. The family would like to thank the staff and friends of Parkwood Place in Elkin for four wonderful years in a caring and friendly atmosphere of companionship. A loving mother, wife and homemaker, Mrs. Peck was born March 18, 1951, in Forsyth County to Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Smitherman. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She retired from the Yadkin County public school system with 31 years of service. Most of her teaching career was spent as a second grade teacher at East Bend School. An avid reader with a special interest and commitment to children, Mrs. Peck frequently volunteered at the East Bend Public Library and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honor society of women educators. Mrs. Peck was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her husband, Cecil Peck; son, David Peck of East Bend; daughter, Allison Peck of Mount Pleasant, ! Mitch is survived by a daughter, Lauren Stimpson of the home, a warm and giving fiance, Cheryl Wooten; two sons of his heart Nathan Wooten and Brandon Payne of East Bend; step-daughter, Deanna (Todd) Barker and two grand children, Emily and Max Barker all of Clemmons; daughter-in-law, Sallie Reavis of Yadkinville; parents, Clay and Linda Stimpson; two brothers, Lee (Gilda) Stimpson, Kenneth (Susan) Stimpson; a si! ster, Crystal (Dustin) Murphy all of Lewisville; nephews, Bo Stimpson, KJ Stimpson and Jessie Reavis; Nieces, Samantha Stimpson, April Stimpson and Tara Miles; brother-in-law, James (Lisa) Reavis; a host of loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and Mitchell leaves behind innumerable friends. Mitchell was self-employed and the owner of M.T. Stimpson Electrical Contractors. Mitchell was a racing veteran of Bowman Gray Stadium in the Blunderbust and Street Stock Divisions and the North Carolina Six Cylinder Division of Friendship Motor Speedway. Mitchell finished the 2007 racing season second in points in the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Division at Bowman Gray Stadium. The funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec 9, 2007 at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Ricky Atkins. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Brim' s Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gerald Jones and Rev. Mark Hall officiating.
