The Forsyth County Genealogical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 14 at 7 pm in the Forsyth County Main Library Auditorium. The program speaker will be Robert Tuttle on "Immigration by Ship in the Mid-1700's". Mr. Tuttle's talk will be illustrated with a 1/24-scale model of a Moravian ship built from plans from the Smithsonian Institution. Refreshments at 6:30 pm. The Library is located at 660 W. 5th Street in Winston-Salem. The meeting is free and open to the public.

He was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Yadkinville to Jesse Lee and Bertha Victoria Hinshaw Mackie. He was a birthright Quaker and a member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, and attended Yadkinville First Baptist Church. He was married to Lestine Earlene "Bill" Lawrence of Elkin on Aug. 30, 1941. He was a graduate of Yadkinville High School, 1938, and Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science, Nashville, Tenn., 1940. He became a licensed embalmer in 1941. He owned and operated Mackie-Gentry Funeral Home, Yadkinville, with his partner, Carl Gentry Jr., and retired in 1984. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of Yadkin Lodge, No. 162, A.F.&A.M., where he served as Master, Secretary for 35 years and District Depu! ty Grand Master and was a member of the Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple Shrine. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, as long as his health permitted. Grady was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Howard Lee Mackie and James Gray Mackie; and a son, Fred Martin Mackie. Bertha was born on Dec. 31, 1912, in Yadkin County, to the late William Asbury and Emma Elizabeth Sizemore. She was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. She worked at K&W Cafeteria for over 30 years. In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Allen L. Payne, who died on Feb. 21, 2000; two brothers; and three sisters. Surviving Mrs. Payne are her sons, Richard Payne (Becky) and Johnny Payne (Linda); grandchildren, Ricky Payne (Lisa), Brandon Payne (Emily), Amber Johnson (Kenny), Christopher Adams, Kelly Jo Payne, Sandra Puckett, Trish Puckett, Will Douglas (Miranda), Joe Douglas (Kristie), Joshua Douglas (Tami) and Wesley Douglas; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Gary was born July 29, 1952, at Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., son of the late Brodie and Mable Money of Yadkinville, N.C. Gary attended Forbush High School and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1975, earning a B.S. in industrial education and technology. Gary' s love of cooking started while in college when he worked summers at Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, N.C. After college, Gary pursued a career in culinary arts, working many winters in various Florida clubs and resorts where he met his wife, Mary. They were married in Banner Elk, N.C., on June 12, 1985. After several years in Florida, the couple resettled in Banner Elk, where Gary resumed full-time work as Sous Chef at Grandfather Golf & Country Club. Gary was involved for many years with the High Country Chef' s Association, and he also did volunteer work at the Senior Center in Newland, N.C. He is survived! by his wife, Mary; and daughter Ashley. Other survivors include a brother, Kent; and many other family members and friends. Gary will be missed. A memorial service to honor Gary will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Nebo Road, Boonville, N.C. Burial will be at a later date. (Sandy) Yeatts of Yadkinville; a son, Michael Timothy Baity of Yadkinville; two grandchildren, Justin Byrd and Corey Yeatts, both of Yadkinville; Shirley Groce Baity of Yadkinville; a sister, Annie Lee McDaniel of Boonville; and several nieces and nephews. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Ken was born Jan. 5, 1933, in Hickory to the late Royston Rice and Baney Lewis Rudolph. Ken was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was retired from the Yadkin County school system. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Rudolph. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Ginger Rollins Rudolph; children Tim Rudolph, Eric Rudolph, Matt Rudolph, Jacob (Dee) Rudolph and Carrie Rudolph; grandchildren Emily Rudolph and Whitney Rudolph; sister Mary (Ted) Furr; brothers Irving Rudolph, Royston (Lavona) Rudolph and Jim (Irene) Rudolph; and several nieces and nephews.
