Mr. Myers was a member of Stony Knoll United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife of 71 years as of May 30, 2008, Winifred B. Myers of the home; son Charles H. (Jessie) Myers of East Bend; daughter Dare Poindexter of East Bend; three grandchildren, Kim D. Myers, Angela M. Johnson and Amanda P. Toomey; two great-grandchildren, Sierra Noel Johnson and Sophia Madeline Toomey; and special friend Ellie Denton. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Cathy Turman and Jerry Cornelius officiating. Burial will follow in Stony Knoll UMC Cemetery. Mrs. Hutchens had two daughters of whom she was very proud, Shannon "Missy" Hutchens of the home and Freda (Beau) Messick of Cape Charles, Va. She also is survived by a sister and two brothers, including one that was very close to her, Jessie Lee (Selena) McEwen; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; two loving dogs, Nicky and Cora; and many special friends, Sue Joyner, Ryan and Miranda McClannon, Mike and Shirley Willard, Rosa Gonzalez and Jane "Sneaky" George. She had worked 13 years with Yadkin County schools and loved working with children until her health no longer permitted it. Ted was born in Yadkin County to Blanche and Raymond VanHoy and was a graduate of West Yadkin High School class of 1954 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Ted worked for the City of Winston-Salem in the Revenue Department for 38 years, until his retirement in 1992. Ted was an avid supporter of Wake Forest Athletics, attending and cheering for hundreds of football, basketball and baseball games. He did not miss a home baseball game this year and closed out the final season at "The Hook" rooting Wake to a three-game sweep of the Duke Blue Devils just two weeks ago, launching the Deacons into the ACC Tournament. Coach Grobe of the football team heralded Ted as "Our Best Fan," as he has attended every Wake Forest home football game since the university moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. The family would like to ex! press their deep gratitude to Tal Jobe of the Wake Forest Athletics Department and are so thankful for the friendship that Ted and Tal shared. Tal' s character, attitude and brotherhood are the marks of a true gentleman, and reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of Wake Forest University"Go Deacs!" Ted was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Stokes and JoAnn Harless. Newman, 94, of Swaims Church Road, Hamp-tonville, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born May 29, 1913, in Yadkin County to the late Moses W. and Rosa Alice Swaim Chappell. Mrs. Newman attended Knobbs School and Jonesville Elementary School and graduated from Jonesville High School class of 1930. She then attended Appalachian State Teachers College and in 1931 returned to teach at Knobbs School, which was a two-teacher school in Hamptonville. She continued to teach at Haynes 2-Teacher School from 1932 to 1933, teaching students that were older than her. In 1944, she taught at Forbush Elementary School; and in 1945 at Boonville Elementary School; and during those years attended summer school to upgrade her certificate. She continued teaching in 1946 at West Yadkin Elementary School until her retirement in 1971. Mrs. Newman was a faithful member of Swaims Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for! 60 years in ages ranging from children to adult classes. She was the church clerk for 17 years, a Bible School worker and sang in the choir. In 1934, she married Roy Newman, who preceded her in death in 1977. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Grace Payne and Beulah Brown; and a brother, Thurman Chappell. Surviving are her beloved daughter, Della Rose Byrd, and husband Toby of Hamptonville; grandchildren Tyanne (Ron) Tabor of Winston-Salem and Tracy Sloop of Hamptonville; great-grandchildren Stephanie (Jamie) Phillips and Abby Wilmoth (Shawn Nobis), all of Jonesville and Dustin Sloop, Hamptonville; great-great-grandchildren Andrew Jones, Tyra Jones, Jaylon Jones and Bryson Phillips; sister Valena Shore of Boonville; and several nieces, cousins and friends. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Swaims Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Byrd and Dr. Mike Haynes officiating. Mrs. Covington was born December 8, 1932, in Yadkin County, a daughter of the late Brady Warden and Lydia Mae Wooten Godfrey. Grace was reared on a rural family farm in Yadkin County and graduated from West Yadkin High School in 1950. She was a member of the high school's basketball team for several years. She continued her love of basketball throughout life as a devoted ACC basketball fan, especially the Duke Blue Devils. After graduating from high school, Grace earned her nursing degree from the Martin Memorial School of Nursing in 1953. She began her career at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. After a short tenure in Elkin, Grace began her longtime career at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Grace worked as a registered nurse and nursing supervisor at Northern Hospital of Surry County for 40 years, retiring in 2000. Upon retirement, Grace continued caring for the community by working at the hospital part-time and being involved in other volunteer opportunities. She also cared for her aunt and provided total care for her mother. Grace was always considered professional, compassionate, and! an inspiration to all who knew her. Mrs. Covington was a member of Fancy Gap Baptist Church. Her children and grandchildren surrounded her at the time of her death as she silently crossed over to heaven. She was born Dec. 11, 1916, to the late Roscoe and Rachel Swaim Benton. "Grannie Annie," as she was affectionately known, was a longtime member of Fall Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and had perfect Sunday school attendance for 24 years. She devoted her life to raising her children as well as being the caregiver to countless children in the community. She married Everette Macemore, and together they had six boys who loved her dearly. She was a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a sister and a friend. She will be remembered for her strong faith in God, deep devotion to her family and the way her blue eyes sparkled when she smiled. One was King David Shore (per census records). There were also 2 David Shores in Yadkin County A David Shore, Jr., married Annie Whitehead on 9-7-1858 Yadkin. David Shores married Lucinda Dickerson on 1-21-1862 Yadkin. David L. Shores married Nancy S. Williams o 8-12-1866. I gave up on trying to straighten the Shore/Shores out a long time ago.
