    1. Re: [NCYADKIN] Need Help In Locating Old Cemeteries
    2. Bob Carter
    3. Hey Sherry, Hope you are doing well and had a good Thanksgiving. We did and went to my sister's home in Rincon, GA which is about 15 miles northwest of Savannah, my hometown. Had enough food for 15-20, but only fed 7 adults and 3 children. My wife baked 8 pies, 2 cakes, and I made 3 casseroles for my sister since she only had Thanksgiving Day off. We came back Friday to rest. :-) Yes, I'd like to do that and we need to make some plans on it maybe in Jan or Feb, or the later half of this month. I'm back working full time until the end of the year so my ability to get over there is limited for the time being. Have only gotten one other nibble from someone who knows of a cemetery off Courtney Huntsville Rd, but poor directions. I haven't given up on Surry since my next survey will be your Shoals Baptist Church. :-) Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sherry Poindexter" <spriversedge@yadtel.net> To: <ncyadkin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 7:25 AM Subject: Re: [NCYADKIN] Need Help In Locating Old Cemeteries > Bob, I probably know of about 15 or 20 right off hand. 3. Hello, Just a note to those of you who know of locations of old cemeteries in Yadkin County, preferably those hidden from the roads and abandoned in the woods. Those visible from the roads such as those with churches are easier to find and we don't need much help with them. However, since the weather has turned colder and the mosquitoes, chiggers, and snakes are not a problem, it's time to get back into the woods to document cemeteries. We've already completed more than 50 so far (easy ones) and need for everyone to tell us where others are located. So, give us some clues to old cemeteries or visit us at http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/yadk/index.htm which will give you details of how we are documenting cemeteries, how to describe driving directions, GPS locations, etc. Once there click on the "about the cemetery survey" link which will help explain what we've been doing and why. Hope to hear from you. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC

    1. [NCYADKIN] Please Help Save our Historic Battlegrounds !
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: firearrow1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.yadkin/3932/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Our history is in danger ! Please sign the online petition to save the Trading Ford NC site at http://www.petitiononline.com/trading/petition.html . The Trading Ford contains Revolutionary and Civil War battlegrounds as well as other history spanning thousands of years . The importance of the Trading Ford NC historic site was most recently recognized in Report to Congress on the Historic Preservation of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Sites in the United States in June 2008. Despite this recognition, careless development continues to threaten the site. The latest threat is by the Duke Energy Company, who wants to build a power plant DIRECTLY ATOP the site of Greene's Crossing ! During the "Race to the Dan River Campaign" in 1781, Greene drew Cornwallis into a trap that would be sprung at Yorktown with Cornwallis' surrender. In Feb 1781, Greene and his men eluded almost certain capture and annihilation by Cornwallis by crossing the Yadkin at the Trading Ford in the night while Cornwallis slept. After the crossing, the river rose , preventing the British from crossing . If not for Greene's Crossing, there would have been no Battle of Guilford Courthouse and probably no surrender at Yorktown. We might all be paying taxes to the Crown ! This is an issue for ALL Americans, not just North Carolinians. Please sign the petition first, and if you'd like to further participate in an email campaign, then go to http://www.carolina-patriot.com/tradingford.html where email and web addresses have been organized . A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend passed away seven years to the day after the death of his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Hughes. Dr. Hughes received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1940. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946, eventually attaining the rank of Major. He was a charter member of Yadkin Sertoma Club and was recognized in 1984 for more than 30 years of service to the community. In 1996, he was voted Sertoman of the Year and in 2005, Yadkin County E.M.S. Station One was dedicated in his honor. Among the other projects that meant so much to him was working to make sure that Pilot Mountain became a state park instead of being developed privately. Dr. Hughes was instrumental in the formation of Horne Creek Living Historical Farm Project and in the creation of Camp Sertoma. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by family and in the loving care of his former colleagues at Hoots Memorial Hospital. He was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 9, 1922, the son of John Glenn and Sallie Hoots Allgood. After attending Mars Hill College, he served as an honor guard in the U.S. Army under General Patton in WWII. After the war, he met his future wife, Peggy Lee Renegar. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1950 with a B.S. in Animal Science, followed by a Master's in Farm Management. As an agricultural agent, the couple moved from Bryson City, to Beaufort, and Jacksonville before settling in Cary in 1957. He retired as an Associate Professor Emeritus from NCSU and as a Major from the U.S. Army Reserves. Jim leaves behind his wife and soulmate of 59 years, Peggy; and their two sons, Jim and wife Jeannette of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Greg and wife Lisa of Cincinnati, Ohio. He loved his granddaughters, Ashton and Meredith, and his daughter by choice, Teresa and husband Don Cleveland. He is survived by siblings Edsel, Sally, and Weymouth and wife Wilma. He was also loved by his Renegar in-laws, Gray, wife Avonelle, Fred, Bob and wife Jeanie. He always enjoyed being an uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Next to his love for his family, Jim enjoyed camping with his family, playing bridge, poker, and golf, gardening, especially roses and azaleas, and dancing with Peg. Jim gave his love of the beach to his children and grandchildren. He was the best crab picker in the world! Jim taught his kids that the best we can make of ourselves is to try to do the right thing. He did a lot of things right in his life. He will be remembered as a loving, supportive husband and life partner, the world's best dad even when that meant discipline, a Christian, a Southern gentleman with a great smile and hardy handshake, and a man who always kept his word and valued people.
