Is there a newspaper in Hamptonville that would have announced his death? The articles we did find on Thomas were in The Landmark, I do not know if that newspaper would have serviced the Hamptonville area. His family was unique in a way as he had 7 children, but his last 3 were triplets who all entered the Civil war and all made it out safe and sound to live to a ripe old age. The articles we have come across mostly deal with the triplet sons and just skirt on Thomas. I am trying to think outside the box and am hoping Hamptonville hold a small secret that will help us. It is possible that Thomas is buried in an unmarked grave there, perhaps in a plot purchased by Cowles, but I doubt any records exist. In the forward to the cemetery book, Hoots notes that "in Yadkin County there are perhaps 2,000 graves that have no marker other than a rough stone or sunken place, with no way of determining who is buried there. The marble tombstone did not come into very great use until about 1850." Flat Rock Cemetery has been surveyed and I doubt if any legible markers have been overlooked. What we have is a newspaper article that indicates that Thomas left his family in Rowan or Wilkes county and went to Hamptonville to work in a hat shop run by Josiah Cowles. It indicated that he was there when he passed in 1836. As I mentioned we could not find his resting place in Wilkes or Rowan so we assumed that he may have been buried in Hamptonville. I do not know if in those days it would have been common to send the body back to the family for burial. If Josiah Cowles was a prominent businessman, I wonder if he had a family burial site where Thomas was laid to rest. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this or any direction you might recommend I take. Thanks Sue Gibbs-Collier Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Folks, Just wanted to let everyone know we have just posted the new home page for Yadkin Co., NCGenWeb at: http://www.ncgenweb.us/yadkin There is absolutely ZERO online at the moment but tomorrow and Thursday we will relink the old pages and started adding new data. Over the weekend I will start asking for your Surnames so that we can do a new Surnames list. I would ask now but afraid some e-mails might get misplaced before I get around to posting them so I will wait for the weekend to put out the call. Thanks to others in the area, we do have some great links for data in addition to what was online previously. If you have any suggestions for good data sources or have anything in your own family files you would like to see posted, all contributions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Nola Duffy CC - Yadkin Co. and Wilkes Co.
