I agree the 1900 death for Samuel H Speer posted by several family trees (also my tree for a while), and found in "Cemeteries of Yadkin County" does not correlate with census records. His mother Ruth Cain is believed to be daughter of Thomas Cain and Celia Steelman. Ruth first married Jacob Edelmann in 1791 in Surry Co, NC. Jacob died bef 1812, and Ruth married Samuel Henry Speer 9 Sep 1812 in Surry (Yadkin) County, NC. Agree, Rachel (1820-1900) was daughter of Samuel L Davis and Rachel Creson. Noted a more recent reply to your inquiry mentioned Mary Ellen Speer (1847-1930)... I believe she was daughter of Samuel Henry Speer and Rachel Davis rather than Samuel Speer and Ruth Cain who were her grandparents. There is a marriage record in Surry County for Samuel Speer and Ruth Eddlemon, not Davis, on 16 Sep 1812, book A, page 5672. Wonder if this Ruth is the same person? One of Sam and Ruth's children Mary Ellen Speer was the 2nd wife of Meredith Franklin Farrington, b. 6 Feb 1847 (Surry) & d. 2 Jul 1930 (Guilford). As many of you know, Frances Casstevens had a lot of information on the SPEER and PATTERSON lines as well as others. Not sure what her family did with her research work, or if it was donated to a library after she died, etc. Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <NCYADKIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 17, 2010 12:09 AM Subject: [NCYADKIN] Samuel and Rachel Speer buried Macedonia MethodistChurch Cemetery > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: pampearson1 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.yadkin/4545/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Is anyone familiar with the Samuel Speer (1823-1900) and his wife Rachel > S. Author: pampearson1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.yadkin/4545/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Is anyone familiar with the Samuel Speer (1823-1900) and his wife Rachel S. Speer (1828-1900) who are buried in Macedonia Methodist Church Cemetery? On the surface he appears to be Samuel H. Speer, son of Samuel H. Speer and Ruth Cain. Rachel, then, would be Rachel Davis, daughter of Samuel Luckett Davis and Rachel Creson. But, the dates given in "Cemeteries of Yadkin Co, NC" don't fit with the information I have for the family. First, census records for the family consistently show both Samuel and Rachel to be born about 1820 (per 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses). Second, Samuel H. Speer died before 1870, when his wife Rachel was listed as head-of-household in the census. In 1880 Rachel Speer definitely has a designation of "widow." So his date of death of 18 Nov 1900 can't be correct. The Samuel and Ruth Speer Bible records (available at the NC Archives) include the birth of Samuel Henry Speer on 21 Aug 1820 (instead of the 10 May 1823 shown in the cemetery records). I have checked the census for other men of the same name and can't find any. Has anyone else run across this discrepancy?
