According to the formation of North Carolina Counties by Corbitt: Johnston County was formed in 1746 from Craven. It is bounded by Wilson, Wayne, Sampson, Cumberland, Harnett, Wake and Nash County I wonder if perhaps you shouldn't check Edgecombe which was formed in 1741 from Bertie. Nash was formed in 1777 from Edgecombe. So depending on what time period you are researching, you will need to check those counties for records.
