Jeremy Francis Gilmer, 1818-1883, was a native of Guilford Co. and was a West Point graduate and Chief of the Confederate Engineer Bureau. The purpose of the map, showing details east of the W&W Railroad was for the Army's use in defending said RR against the depredations of the Federals coming from the coastal areas which were under the control of the invading army.
