Carol, Thank you, but I thought that we were friends.... I have come to the point in my life that I have decided that those who want the truth will look for it; those that don't won't. While secondary sources are wonderful sources for clues, they should always be confirmed by original records. Whenever a book is published, or a new web site put up, there are a vast number of people who accept this work as truth. They in turn add this to their data and others see it, and do the same. Before long, this is accepted, BUT no one can supply facts to back it up. It is much easier to just accept something and put it up than it is to correct it after it has been printed. Somehow, the corrections or errata never get the same spotlight. Over 2 years ago, I wrote several articles for Southern Bass that showed that Capt. Nathaniel BASSe was 1) not the son of Humphrey and Mary (Buschier) Basse, and 2) he was not the progenitor of all of the Basses in VA. However, go to any web site or pick up any book and you will see this in print. It has been written like this as early as 1883. However, original records in the PRO in England show.... 30 Aug 1654. Major Edward Basse, citizen and merchant of London, aged 60, and Dame Mary Poole (signs Pole), wife of Sir John Poole of Bromley, Middlesex, aged 62, deposes that Hester Hobson of Bromley, widow, Abigail Thorpe of Chelsea Hampton, Oxon widow, and Sarah wife of Thomas Hastler, citizen and barber surgeon of London are sisters and are daughters of Humphry Basse of London, merchant, and Mary his wife, both long deceased. The sisters are co-heirs of Luke Basse who died a batchelor and was brother and heir of Nathaniel Basse lately deceased without issue in Virginia. Thomas Hastler is appointed attorney (MCD 5) It very specifically states.... died without heirs..... Next, the original Bible Records (which are at the LVA) have been really misquoted. I continue to read that Keziah Tucker, wife of John Bass was the daughter of Robin the Elder, Chief of the Nansemond Tribe. 1) The Bible records show her name as Elizabeth. 2) She is not given a last name of TUCKER. 3) Her father's name is not given. 4) How can a woman who is being married in 1638, be the daughter of a man that was alive and well in 1710? This is just a couple of examples... Hopefully, it will again prod BASS researchers to go back and read original records. I am sorry, but I do not have the time to complete someone else's research. My cousin Patti and I are writing manuscripts for the Nansemond Tribe to sell to help raise money for the Tribal Cultural Center, so we are immersed in trying to get some of these done. When available, I will be more than happy to let you know.
