    3. Ted, After an email from Al Bass I went to the NC Archives today in Raleigh and got some additional information. Exaline, Washington and James were all siblings. Clarry Bass was the mother. Based on what I found, I believe Clarry was the second oldest of William and Nancy Bass. William died in 1858 and that is the reason Nancy was alone in the 1860 census> Clarry's husband and father of the 3 kids was John Mathis who according to the 1850 Wayne Co census was born in VA. It also lists Clarry and the oldest 2- Exaline and Washington as being born in SC. I tend to doubt that since the Bass family had been in this area for a long time. More research will help me here. Al indicated he could help me trace the Bass family back several generations. I saw the book on the "Bass Family of Black Creek". It had lots of info but was layed out differently from most books so I will need to revisit it. Thanks for your note. It has been a fun day even though I had to work until 12:00 today and I have been up since 3:00 AM this morning. Time to turn in. Thanks again, Larry Matthews PS: I would like to have an email address for Clement Lucas. Does he live in the Black Creek area?
