    3. Hi Mike, I was interested in your Kinchen Pittman from the Wilson Township. My Great grandfather, Elijah Jesse Barnes had a brother named Kinchen who was named for a close family friend. Your Kinchen is most likely the one. He is the only one I have found in the right time frame. Do you have any bio information on him? THanks. SLoan M. 3. There is a Pittman researcher on the list....Perhaps she can shed some light on your family. I am a descendant of a Pittman from Johnston County, but I research mainly the Pridgens from Nash, Greene, Duplin, and other parts of the United States. Good luck. There is also a Pittman list on rootsweb. 3. EXPERT GENEALOGY Editor: Jeannette Holland Austin Series: Odd Sources Subject: Finding Information Date: Sept. 10, 1998 Have you exhausted all your sources and still not found the information you need? All our ancestors did not record their deeds, make wills....some even avoided the census taker. So, after we have done everything, what next? It's time to do Incremental Research. That is, look under ALL the rocks....look at the big picture, all possible family members. Collateral lines, or suspect collateral lines. After all, we are all cousins....it is simply a matter of whether we are 1st cousins or 299th cousins 10 times removed. Here is what I do. 1. Gather all information on the name in the county (in which they lived) as well as adjoining counties. Put those scraps of paper away, for the time being. 2. Visit different libraries, archives, and historical societies. Each of these has "different" genealogies, bible records, private collections, manuscripts, etc. We have some excellent regional libraries around the country who specialize in collecting genealogical materials. Genealogical Societies who do not have their own facilities, requently work within the framework of their own local (county) library. Allen Co. Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana for example, collects all the genealogical newsletters and catalogs them. Their index, called the Persi Index, is available on microfiche in family history centers. You can order copies of material from them, after paying nominal copying fees. Jack Ladson, private owner of the Ladson Library in Vidalia, Georgia informed me that he has collected more books and information than any other facility. His entrepreneural funds make it possible to purchase all the books he wants. And he says that he has done that. It may be that his collection will be donated somewhere (after his demise), or, it may not. So, that sources is worth examining. 3. Read all the published genealogical society newsletters and bulletins, irrespective of what state they represent. After all, this is where you find scattered bible records of scattered family members. 4. Search for bible records. This resource helps me the most, particularly on seemingly unrelated people, because I can now identify in the deeds, wills, etc. "who" is "who". This feature of detective work handily eliminates, as well as serves. Here is what I mean: while working in a particular county (records, census, etc.), I try to put together families which are not mine. Later, it is surprising how these come together. They are great-great-uncles, cousins, part of the intermarriage system, actually my distant relatives. If I know my distant relatives, then I know who is not in my direct line. This narrows it down. Bible records are found variously in archives, libraries, genealogical and historical societies, from individuals, and in published formats. Don't forget to search the DAR collections. There are persons such as Leonardo Andrea (deceased) whose collection includes many Colonial South Carolina (and a few other states) bible records. Genealogists, such as myself, also collect bible records. I try to collect everything I can. Some of my (various states) collection is online at - http://www.genealogy-books.com/ (click on "Online Bible Records"). Also, I have published bibles, both available on CDs or floppies. To see the tables of contents for - AL - http://www.genealogy-books.com/alatable.htm GA - http://www.genealogy-books.com/tcgabibl.htm NC-SC - http://www.genealogy-books.com/ncsctabl.htm VA - http://www.genealogy-books.com/vatable.htm 5. After you tie together everyone else's lineage, then what? When you write the book on your own family, it will now be quite complete! Scouting around, gathering the scraps, is the real digging. You will be amazed of what is available via this indirect route. Don't forget to check back periodically - to see if any new records have emerged. This happens, you know, as people find county records, books, bibles, etc. in their attics. Lots of them turn up at garage sales, flea markets, thrifty stores, etc. Also, it might be time to pump the relatives again. What I do is contact everyone with the same surname in the area where my progenitor lived. Phone books are available on CDs, in fiche collections at libraries, and on the internet. This is the way I found my great aunt! She had the old photographs, and of course knew her parents and grandparents...directed me to the old homeplace (where I found more information). Taken from: Research Tips - Naturalization Records Antoinette J. Seagraves in "Penn in Hand" ...Before 1709, for non-British subjects, naturalization was required and each colony could determine the length of residency as wellas other requirements which varied from colony to colony. Since a non-citizen could not buy, own, or convey land, it was important for them to become naturalized. ...From 1709 to 1740 requirements were to include an oath of allegiance and the partaking of the sacrament of communion in the Church of England in the presence of witnesses. An Act of Parliament in 1740 stated that an alien should reside in a particular colony at least 7 years before appearing before a magistrate to take his oath of loyalty to the Crown and colony and become a ctitizen. ...On 26 March 1790, the first Congress under the Constitution, in its second session, took action and passed an act (1 Stat. 103) stating that any free white adult alien, male or female, who had resided within the limits and jurisdiction of the United States for a period of 2 years, was eligible for citizenship. An individual who desired to become a citizen under this act was to apply to "any common law court of record, in any one of the states wherein he shall have resided for the term of one year at least." ...Congress repealed the 1790 Act and passed a new one (1 Stat. 414) on 29 January 1795. This increased the residency requirement from 2 to 5 years. Applicants were also required to publically declare their intention to become citizens of the United STates and to renounce any allegiance to foreign prince, potentate, sate or sovereignty 3 years before being admitted as citizens. Any immigrants who had "borne any hereditary title or been of the order of nobility" had to renounce that status. ...The residency requirement for naturalization is of importance for genealogists for it helps to pinpoint a date of immigration for the ancestor. If you can locate the date of the naturalization for the ancestor, knowing the residency requirement of the time period, you can go back that number of yeaers to arrive at the latest possible date of immigration ...With the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, the filing of a declaration of intention at least 5 years before admission to citizenship and residence of 14 years in the United States and 5 years in a state was required by one of these laws (1 Stat. 566). This act was repealed on 14 April 1802 and replaced by a new law (2 Stat. 153) which in effect represented a return to the requirements of the 1795 law and formed the basis upon which all subsequent naturalization legislation has been built. The 1802 law stated that any free, white alien might be admitted to citizenship provided the alien: 1) completed a declaration of intention to become a citizen before a court at least 2 years before admission to citizenship; 2) took an oath of allegiance to the United States; 3) resided in the United States at least 5 years and in the state for 1 year; and 4) had established good moral character and an attachment to the United States government. 3. Carol, I will be tracing information on the following families. 1-Matthews 2-Weeks 3-Moore 4-Gills Here's what I have. My grandfather Joshua Lawrence Matthews was born 7/9/1884 in the Wilson area. He had two brothers- older was William Leslie and younger Clarence. His father was James Matthews b-3/9/1850 d.11/21/88. Supposedly James was born in VA but I have no idea where. He came into the Wilson area around 1870 and married a Laura Gills from the Elm City area. Laura b. 6/1/1851 d. 8/7/1924. Joshua Lawrence married Mary Pearl Weeks on 6/12/1907. Her parents were John Burton Weeks and Elzabeth Moore Weeks. I have no information on the lineage of John Burton Weeks. I have him b.2/28/1848 and d. 1/11/1880. I question the death date because Mary Pearl was not born until 4/29/1885 and d. 10/1/1970. Mary Pearl had at least one brother-Ernest. Ernest has a daughter Margaret that supposedly still lives in the Wilson area. I have never met her because I don't have her married name. Parents for Elizabeth Moore are Wilford Moore and Mary Ann Ward. I have no information on either or if they were from this area. The only information I have on Laura Gills is that her mother was Sally Gills. I have no listing for a father/husband. I spoke recently with Virginia Matthews Taylor who still lives on the old homeplace in the Wilson area. Virginia was a daughter of William Leslie Matthews who stayed in the Wilson area after both Joshua Lawrence and Clarence moved to the Moore Co area in 1919. I have all information on both of their trees but need help with the Wilson Co end. My grandmother's grandfather Iicson Gray married Lucinda ? is from the Washinton/Bertie/Beauford County (NC) area. Iicson is a Native American, I think Tuscarora Indian. His son is William Gray, which William later moved to Halifax and Nash Counties where he married George Anna Whitley. George Anna is the daughter of Tempie Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.) and Wright (Right) Whitley (related to the Whitleys' in Black Creek, NC (Wilson Co). Wright's mother was a Whitley and his father was a Vick. George Anna used to live in Black Creek just across the railroad tracks. Tempie's (Tempe) parents are Hopey and Alston. Tempie, her parents, brothers and sisters were slaves of the John & Thomas Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.). I was told Tempie had a boarding house in Nashville, NC that was were William and George Anna met and married. William and George Anna's daughter is Lena Gray. Lena married James "ST" Robinson (Wayne/Wilson Co.). James is also known as "Buddy", his parents are Louise Barnes and Anderson (Andrew) Robinson. After Anderson's death, Louise married Milton Sanders. Please contact me if you have any info whether big or small. I know that someone must have heard of these people. 3. Someone sent this message in a query about railroad pensions. Information on the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen was on rootsweb recently. I don't know if any of this will help you, but perhaps the Railroad Retirement Board could give you information on pensions. "Jim Hernan said the BRT ceased to exist in the late 60-s, 70-s. I understand from him and others, it was absorbed by the United Transportation Union. The main office is in Cleveland, Ohio. J.A. suggests if we are in an area where a railroad has a terminal, they can give the address of the UTU. I would imagine it is also on the net. There is also a Railroad Retirement Board, 844 Rush Street, Chicago, 60611-2092, according to Ken Schofield" Also, I found this even more informative letter in the Roots-L archives for 1997 The fee for searching our records is $16 for EACH individual on whom records are requested. This fee is payable before any search is attempted. It is not refundable, even if we are unable to locate the information requested or if the file has been destroyed. If you wish the Board to do such a search, please return your letter, along with your check or money order, in the enclosed envelope. Your check or money order should be made payable to the Railroad Retirement Board, and sent to the Office of Public Affairs, Railroad Retirement Board, 844 North Rush St., Chicago, Ill 60611-2092. Also, if you wish us to search our records the following information will be of interest to you. The Railroad Retirement Board, like the Social Security Administration, was not established until the mid-1930's, and it began maintaining its own records of all covered rail service in 1937. Therefore, the Board's service records are limited to individuals who worked in the rail industry AFTER 1936. The Board's records are kept by the RAILROAD EMPLOYEE'S social security number and having that number is the most accurate and efficient way of locating his or her records. We cannot locate inactive records by the social security number of an auxiliary beneficiary, such as a spouse or widowe(er). A person's social security number often appears on his or her death certificate. In some cases, if that number is not available, having the employees full name, including middle name or initial, as well as his or her complete dates of birth and death may be of some help in determining whether we have any records of that person. However, in dealing with relatively common surnames, and/or cases where even this minimal information is unavailable, it is not possible to determine whether we have any records of a person withouth knowing his or her social security number. Sincerely, Bill Poulos, Director of Public Affairs" Happy hunting.
