    1. [NCWILSON-L] Sarah Batts And John Whitehead
    2. Peggy Ward
    3. Does anyone have the parents of a JOHN WHITEHEAD m. SARAH BATTS in their family tree? They are my mom's great grandparents? They were born somewhere around 1809/1810. I believe they were from Nash or Edgecombe Co.NC I know that is where John Thomas Whitehead m. Mary Ann Ruffin was from.Born in the year 1844. John was born 25 July 1844. Mary was born January 28, 1844. She died 28 November 1893. Her parents were Gray Ruffin and Nancy Bailey. He had other brothers and sisters which I have names and dates of these people. My mothers father b. 1873 was also John Thomas Whitehead. Does anyone know for sure if the first John I meantioned, born ?1809/1810; if his Father was a Matthew Whitehead? If so, who did he marry and do you have dates and where found? Thanks for any help. Sorry the date of 1944 in an earlier post for John Whitehead was a typing error. Peggy

    3. It sounds like this is the Ellis line I'm looking for. I have a death certificate for Jane Ellis Flowers b. 4-27-1869 in Wilson Co. Her parents are Eliga or Elija (it's hard to read) and Mary Ellis. Jane died 3-3-1928 and was buried in Plymouth. She was married to Callie Elbert Flowers. I hope this can tie in with your Ellis line. Thanks, Mike Simmons Pierce City, MO.

    3. I "lifted" this timeline from another list...thanks to Eugene Chesson 1584 Two ships. captained by Phillip Armardas (age 19!) and Arthur Barlowe, spent 6 weeks in summer along the mid-Atlantic coast of present day North Carolina and Roanoke Island (but then called "Virginia") sailing under the auspices of Sir Walter Raleigh. 1585 Raleigh named Lord and Gov. of VA and second expedition settles Roanoke Island. 1586 Sir Francis Drake visits Roanoke Colony but a storm drives his fleet to sea. 1587 Second colony started with 89 men, 17 women, and 2 children. Virginia Dare born Aug 18 1587. 1590 Roanoke Colony had disappeared, leaving as the only clue "Croatan" 1607 Jamestown, VA colony, first permanent colony in the new world under Capt. John Smith. 1608 Jamestown Colony sends two men to Chowan region to search for the 1587 colonists. 1622 John Pory, secretary of Virginia colony explored Chowan region and possibly the initial band of settlers moved into NC from VA following down the Blackwater and Chowan Rivers to a region that is now Gates County (ealier Chowan Co.); one of the early regions was Orapeak (Corapeake). 1638 County of Norfolk VA formed to include territory as far south as modern Oracoke Inlet. 1646 Expedition from VA against Indians along the Chowan River led by Maj. Gen. Richard Bennett (by land) and Col. Thomas Dew (by water). 1648 (Approx.) Henry Plumpton of Nansemond Co. VA, Thomas Tuke and several others bought land along the Morratuck (Roanoke) River from Indians but no evidence that they settled then. 1650 Edward Bland and others explored the Chowan, Meherrin and Roanoke River areas 1653 Colony established along the banks of the Roanoke River and the south side of the Chowan River with setytlers from VA after a grant to the Rev. Roger Green; possibly first permanent European settlement in NC; Virginians began to take up land in the Roanoke (Albemarle) Sound region. 1657 Nathaniel Batts, first known permanent European settler in the Albemarle region, had a hosue on the Chowan River by this year (other sources suggest a date of 1665). 1662 Samuel Stephens appointed "commander of the southern plantation." Etc. Some brief early history can be found in Winslow's "History of Perquimans County" who says "...As Chowan River has its headwaters in VA, with the Blackwater as one of its tributaries, the inference may well be drawn that those early settlers followed the water courses... the land adjoining the Dismal Swamp was an impenetrable tangle..." The Introduction to the 1st volume of "Colonial Records of NC" by Parker says that "The Chowan area was then considered part of VA, where the new settlement was known as the 'southern plantation'." 1. [NCWILSON-L] My NC Connection
    2. I thought I would repost my query. My grandmother's grandfather Iicson Gray married Lucinda ? is from the Washinton/Bertie/Beauford County (NC) area. Iicson is a Native American, I think Tuscarora Indian. His son is William Gray, which William later moved to Halifax and Nash Counties where he married George Anna Whitley. George Anna is the daughter of Tempie Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.) and Wright (Right) Whitley (related to the Whitleys' in Black Creek, NC (Wilson Co). Wright's mother was a Whitley and his father was a Vick. George Anna used to live in Black Creek just across the railroad tracks. Tempie's (Tempe) parents are Hopey and Alston. Tempie, her parents, brothers and sisters were slaves of the John & Thomas Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.). I was told Tempie had a boarding house in Nashville, NC that was were William and George Anna met and married. William and George Anna's daughter is Lena Gray. Lena married James "ST" Robinson (Wayne/Wilson Co.). James is also known as "Buddy", his parents are Louise Barnes and Anderson (Andrew) Robinson. After Anderson's death, Louise married Milton Sanders. Please contact me if you have any info whether big or small. I know that someone must have heard of these people. Thanks, BJ

    3. Hi Sloan, The only info I have on Kinchen Pitman is from the 1860 census of Wilson County. He is listed as being 21 years old, with an occupation of a day laborer. The index of marriages 1855-1903 ( I believe from Black Creek Township) lists him marrying Sallie Williford on 1-2-1860. Do you have any info on your Kinchen? Also, would anyone know the origin of the name Kinchen? Mike Sloan Barnes wrote: > Hi Mike, > > I was interested in your Kinchen Pittman from the Wilson Township. 3. Hi BJ Sorry, but the only records I have at the moment are copies of the 1860 census from Wilson county. My copy only lists Kinchen and Sallie Pitman, but I only have 2 pages of the census. Maybe he is listed on another page. 1. [NCWILSON-L] Intro
    2. Ted Gurley
    3. I am studying and researching the Gurley line. I just transcribed a handwritten account of Jeremiah Gurley's narrative of his service in the Rev. war from his pension file. My line goes to John Gurley who d.1790 in Johnston Co. and miraculously I found his handwritten account of his nine children who were born in Johnston Co. in Jeremiah's file. I am still trying to figure out the relationship between a William Gurley who died in 1760 and another John Gurley who also died in 1760 in Johnston Co. according to probate records. Another name I need more info on is Elizabeth Edwards who was married to John (the one who died in 1790). My grandfather is John Rufus Gurley - he was police chief of Wilson from the mid 1920's to 1939 when he died. In Dallas I'm very lucky to have access to the Dallas Public Library which has great records. -------------------------------------------------------------- Ted M.
