I live close to Grimesland. > > Thanks:>) Joe Robert (Bob) Baker [email protected] Hello Cousin Bob, You are correct, we are researching the same families, and this is weird, I live in nearby Washington. I descend through Blake and Nancy's son James who removed from Bakertown to that part of Wilson Co. adjoining Pitt and Greene Cos. His son King David married Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Forbes, daughter of Hyrum Forbes. My mother was named for Mary Elizabeth Forbes by my grandfather William Daniel Baker. I have your line through the 1870 Wilson Co. census, children of Thomas and Sally (Forbes) Baker: Marinda b 1858; Stephen b Jan 1860 d bef 1870?; Hyrum b 1861; Richard b 1864; Harry b 1866 and Ephraim b 1869. And I probably have more. I need to go back and look at them individually. From whom do you descend? I've been researching family since 1973. My mother was really into this and we went to Bakertown many times. On one trip I picked up a brick supposedly from the foundation of Blake's house. We talked to some of the older locals and picked up some stuff. Blake b 1800 was son of James Baker b abt 1768 Nansemond Co. VA (now City of Suffolk) who arrived in Edgecombe Co. in 1803/4. Nansemond Co. is a burned county. I've been there several times and have worked hard to construct a pedigree based on patent records (location) 1623-1732, the Vestry Book of the Upper Parish of Nansemond 1743-1793 and a surviving index of court fee books of Nansemond. I've traced this Baker family (there were others in Nansemond) to Silvester Baker b abt 1615 d bef 24 Mar 1675/6 Nansemond. He MAY be the same Selvester Baker christened 16 Jan 1613 in Sibsey, Lincolnshire, son of Anthony Baker. Silvester Baker and Thomas Harrell were headrights of and likely indentured servants of Robert Bennett, cousin of Richard Bennett, Governor of Virginia during the Commonwealth. They arrived abt 1633 and settled on the plantation of Robert Bennett adjoining Richard Bennett's plantation on Bennett's Crk at the mouth of the Nansemond River in James River. Silvester Baker, after he served out his indenture, likely married the daughter of William Parker and sister of Richard Parker Sr. and settled on Parker's Crk located between the Nansemond River and the Dismal Swamp. He already possessed land there, when he patented 250a on 1 Apr 1658. We descend through the Parker marriage - Richard Baker b abt 1642 d abt 1702 Nansemond Co. Silvester married (2) Mercy ? I confess to spending more time on Virginia records than on Edgecombe and Wilson Co. stuff so I'm very interested in what you have, and will gladly share the rest of mine. Connie

    1. [NCWILSON-L] Helpful tips
    2. psmartoc
    3. EXPERT GENEALOGY Editor: Jeannette Holland Austin Series: Odd Sources Subject: City Directories Date: December 2, 1998 So here we go. We run the gammat: 1. Census records for time-period/place in which our ancestor lived. 2. Search all the county records where our ancestor lived, as well as adjoining counties. 3. Military records, such as pensions, muster rolls. 4. Cemeteries, bibles, genealogies, everything we can find at libraries and archives. And so on. What we are trying to do is establish our ancestors movements throughout his lifespan, learning more about him....thus being a good detective. An example of how one learns additional details which help to assemble a "person" profile is the cemetery. A visit there might locate a number of burials of small children during the same months and years. This means the area suffered some kind of epidemic. This might help explain some pre-mature deaths in your own family. There is another place to search to help establish the time-line, and that is the City Directories. These are not always easy to find, but most regional libraries have some old City Directories of varying dates. There is a good reason for the gaps in dates, as well as missing City Directories . Most genealogical departments inside libraries depend upon contributions. A number of these books are contributed by local genealogical and historical societies. If it weren't for such societies, we simply would not have the source material which exists today. Not only do they publish genealogical magazine and county histories, but also campaign for bible and cemetery records. If you haven't visited a historical society, it is an excellent source of some unexpected materials. For example, the Richmond (Virginia) Historical Society has a marvelous collection of civil war weapons, swords, clothing, wall murals, as well as an excellent card file system of their genealogical holdings, which are quite different from the Virginia State Archives. Also, State Archives collect City Directories. The purpose of City Directories is to list head of household, name of wife, address, where they worked, and yellow pages similar to our phone books. It's really fun to see where your father worked during different time periods. You might not recall your own address during your childhood - there is where to look. Then, go take a peek at that house. It helps shore up your childhood memories. How about seeing your grandparents house? The address will assist you in quickly locating the family in latter-day census records. This is especially useful for large cities. By cross-checking from one year to the next, you might even figure out an approximate date of death, as well as when the family moved to and from an area. It is a good idea to check for surnames of others living at the same address. This helps locate other children who since become an adult. The commercial section can be used to learn information on churches, cemeteries, funeral homes, schools, etc. It is helpful to search Funeral Homes records, as well as local cemeteries and church graveyards. Be sure and obtain a copy of the county map from tax assessor's office (at courthouse) before you go out into the field. This will be extremely helpful in locating churches, cemeteries, etc. Carol Pridgen Martoccia 903 East Fifth St. Greenville, NC 27858 PRIDGEN Homepage : http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/6297 PRIDGEN Archives: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl List manager for the Pridgen Family and for Wilson County, NC (NCWilson)

    1. [NCWILSON-L] The Census
    2. psmartoc
    3. The Census It was the first day of the census, and all through the land each polster was ready... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and his quills were tucked by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman seemed tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair tucked back into place. She gave him some water ...as they sat at the table and she answered his questions..... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few --- the oldest was twenty , the youngest not quite two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister she whispered was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age...the marks of the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children .......... she nodded her head .......and felt her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she..."never forgot" was it Pennsylvania? or Ohio? or what? They had come cross the sea, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some, and write some, but really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done, so he mounted his horse and rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years". Now picture a time warp .....its now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for "THAT ENTRY" from long, long ago. Could they ever imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew would they wonder at the yearnings we feel and the searching that makes them so lovingly real. Would they understand our efforts, our struggles, to reach back to touch them because they are ours? Hush now awhile, we can hear if we listen the words they impart, "Our bloods in your veins and our love is in your hearts". 3. I hope that all of you know that the emails have been archived at the following location....in fact all of rootsweb surname and locality lists are located at that site. You first need to go to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Once you get to this site, type in the name of the list you are interested in, ex: NCWilson The window for the NCWilson list will pop up and then you type in a surname or a place name that you are interested in: Ex: Stantonsburg or Winstead or Amerson The e-mails about that local or about that particular name will come up and then you just need to click on each of them.
