EXPERT GENEALOGY Editor: Jeannette Holland Austin Series: Census Records Subject: 1890 Census Date: January 8, 1999 We really do need the 1890 Census, however, this was burned in 1921. At the time, the census schedules were located in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, D. C. Even though the fire was contained, it flooded the area. The damage was not assessed until the following day, and it was noted that the census records soaked in the water overnight outside the protected vault area. The schedules were dried out, re-copied. But it was impossible to restore them. So? They should still be intact, yes? In 1932 Congress authorized certain documents to be destroyed, which included the original 1890 schedules. Then, in 1934, the remaining schedules were destroyed by the Department of Commerce. Some of the mid-western census records are still available. For example, the 1890 Illinois schedules were later found, and again in 1953, when some fragmented schedules were discovered. Family History Centers have microfilmed these fragmented schedules (which consist mostly of mid-western states, and then, not all counties, or enumeration districts are in tact. So, how do we deal with this? The answer is to search around it - 1880 and 1900 census records, as well as detailed research in the county records where ancestors resided, paying particular attention to deed transactions, as well as tax digests. This provides the detective within us "some" satisfaction as to where people were on dates certain. Happily, the 1880 Census - Every-name Index is now complete, and soon to arrive in Family History Centers. The old cendex method which did not include all families - is the pits!! Especially for a census this large. ===================================== BACK ISSUES OF EXPERT GENEALOGY NOW AVAILABLE ON CD ===================================== 1998 newsletters published in Expert Genealogy are now available on cd. Here's some food for thought from a recent Genealogy Newsletter. Since all of our work is on Rootsweb (county pages and mailing lists), we are indeed indebted to Rootsweb. If you could afford a small contribution at this time, it would really help. Each of contributing just a bit will make a large sum in the end. ==================================================== Where is all this going in 1999? I have as much trouble peering into the future as I do digging up the past, but it appears to me that the costs of computer genealogy (software and CDs) are likely to increase. Moreover, the price of admission to many genealogy sources on the Web is probably going to go up. Many surfers are already paying $5 to $10 per month ($60-$120 annually) to have access to various sources or finding aids. Many onliners are discovering their "free" Web space or e-mail account comes with hidden prices -- loaded with ads and their names and e-mail addresses sold to cyber-merchants. RootsWeb is one of the "Top 25" or so sites on the Internet and continues to swim against the tide by providing free access to huge amounts of genealogical data. Yet currently less than three percent of its users are providing financial support. If RootsWeb users contributed only $2-$3 per month ($24 to $36 annually) there would be adequate financing to maintain and build an incredible genealogical resource. If they don't, the future of Internet genealogy looks expensive. * * * * * DONATIONS TO HELP SUPPORT ROOTSWEB ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Hello everyone, I would like to ask if someone would check the 1870 Wilson Co. census to see if they can find the parents of Mary E. Dixon. Also need, parents of George Washington Boyett and any other pertinent information on these two people. Would also like a check of the 1900 census. If you choose to do the check, any information would be greatly appreciated, if I can do the search over the Internet, please let me know where to retrieve it. Thank you Al Bass for your contribution to my "Family Tree " Sincerely, Patricia Kyle Nelson Concord Virginia
Sloan, My great grandfather was George Washington Boyett, he married Mary Elizabeth Dixon in Wilson Co. around the 1870s or 1880s. They had a daughter named Gladys Mae Boyett born in 1888. [ my grandmother ] . If this matches your George Boyett please let me know. Sincerely, Patricia
Patricia, My family has a George Boyette in it. He had a daughter Nancy Boyette who married my Great Grandfather William Lewis Barnes. Nancy was born around 1838-40 in what was then Johnston County (now Wilson county). Your George and mine may be the same. I know only what is listed on the 1850 census for he and his family. His wife was Causia. Let me know if you think we have a connection. There are three Mary E. Dixons and one Geo. W. Boyette in the 1870 Wilson Co. Census. Suggest you look in the 1900 census (which I don't have a copy of) but should be in the library. Al Bass
Let me say I am very excited about this list. I am researching for information on my great grandparents who from what I know came from Wilson or the surrounding areas of NC. If someone knows of any sources that I may use pertaining to this area please let me know and I will be forever grateful. Here are the names I am searching for: Mary Elizabeth Dixon, b.? d.? George Washington Boyett, b.? d.? The only way I can date these people is that they had a daughter [my grandmother] who was born September 2,1888. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hope ncwilson-L and all the wonderful people who participate will be my last search for my great grandparents. Thank You All in advance for your time, Sincerely, Patricia Kyle Nelson Concord, Va.

You probably need to check the NCGenWeb site on Wilson County for the history of the area. It was named for Louis Wilson, a state legislator. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ then select the county. After many years of searching by my relatives before me, and a few years on my own, I still seek clues as to where my line of Wilsons came from. So it is in this continuing effort that I have subscribed to this list. I know little about the Wilson County Area, and am curious as to how it came to be so named, etc. My line extends back to the mid 1700's here in what was then Old Rowan (now Davidson County) to the first land grant to Richard Wilson recorded in 1783. I would like to find some thread that links my line back to Staunton Virginia area. I have no solid evidence to make this connection, except for the works of some researchers who interviewed family members before my time, noting that the word of mouth History claimed Staunton as the place that the Wilsons occupied prior to coming to this location in NC. I have a listing of my tree on my website for those who wish to review the names and dates. Thanks, and I hope to find some clues. Thanks. I tried to include as much info as possible. I also sent it that mailing list but I know there are other I did not know about. Thanks once again. Brenda
Halifax --> Bertie --> Nash/Edgecombe Counties, NC My grandmother's grandfather Iicson (Isom) Gray married Lucinda ? and is from the Washinton/Bertie/Beauford County (NC) area. Iicson is a Native American, I think Cherokee or Tuscarora Indian. My Granny says hes Cherokee. Their children are Stephen, Henry, Harriiet Lucinda and William Gray. His son is William Gray, which William later moved to Halifax, Edgecombe and Nash Counties where he married George Anna Whitley. George Anna is the daughter of Tempie Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.) and Wright (Right) Whitley (related to the Whitleys' in Nashville, Spring Hope, Black Creek (Wilson Co), NC . Wright's mother was a Whitley and his father was a Vick. George Anna used to live in Black Creek just across the railroad tracks. Tempie's (Tempe) parents are Hopey and Alston. Tempie, her parents, brothers and sisters ( Cato, Cloe, Alfred, Nancy, Mary & Mariah) were slaves of John & Thomas Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.). I was told Tempie had a boarding house in Nashville, NC that was were William and George Anna met and married. William worked for the Atlantic Coastlie Railroad. William and George Anna's children are Benjamin (Bud), Eva, Stephen, Tempy Ann and Lena Gray. Lena (my grandmother) married James "ST" Robinson (Wayne/Wilson Co.). James is also known as "Buddy", his parents are Louise Barnes and Anderson (Andrew) Robinson. After Anderson's death, Louise married Milton Sanders. Surnames from this union are Roundtree (Rountree), Sanders. Coley, Jones and Jenkins. Please contact me if you have any info whether big or small. Feel free to pass this information on to someone you think will be able to help me. If you have assess to listed surname mailing list please feel free to forward this query to them also. I know that someone must have heard of at least one of these people. Thanks, Brenda [email protected]
Dont think your James Baker is the same as mine. Mine, as far as I can determine from census records was born in 1826. He married Temperrance Ellis on 21 Jan 1846 and they had seven children from 1847 to 1869. The offspring were named David, Polly, Bolin, Blake, Edwin, Sabren and Fannie, from the oldest to the youngest. James had six brothers named John, Thomas, Daniel, Richard, Henry, and Peter, and no sisters. His Father, Blake, married Nancy Barnes on 17 Jan 1825 in Edgecombe County, NC.

To all Barnes of WIlson CO, NC Recently I came across a single, heavily overgrown cemetery marker that may not be in any of the Wilson Co. cemetery records. This is NOT part of my family line, but I hope that someone can use it. If it was of value, I would appreciate hearing from you at [email protected] (Johnston Co, NC). Hwy 42 East, approx 8/10ths mile into Wilson County from Johnston Co., approx 2/10ths mile past intersection of SR 1122, North Side of Hwy 42, approx. 50 feet in an open field (at least in December of 1998). I believe that this is the same Harriet Barnes listed in Wilson Co., Black Creek District, #047, home of : Bunyan Barnes 50 Rody Barnes 45 Harriet 21 Louisa 18 Penelope 15 Columbus 16 Jonathan 8 (occurs later in this text) Willie Jackson 8 Harriet also occurs in the home of Ellas Barnes, 1870, Spring Hill, Wilson Co, #117: Ellas Barnes 34 Harriet Barnes 32 Roxana 6 Rhosco 1 1870 Black Creek, #246: Rosa Barnes 56 (Rody Barnes of 1860?) Juneus Evans 7 Alice Evans 9 This info is from the 1860 and 1870 Census Abstracts of Joan L. Howell, 1993. I have not checked the original census records, nor have I checked the 1850 or 1880 Census. Please verify any of this information with the original Census records before accepting any of it as fact. For some reason, many of the family seem to have changed ??? names (Louisa and Penelope), and I have no indication of relationship of Harriet Barnes to Ellas Barnes (may be a brother, and the children may be his) Ellas Barnes is listed in Ag schedules of the period, and there are more Barnes in the area. Note: I have read recently that thousands of files which were previously thought to have been burned of the WWI soldiers have been found. If you have been told in the past that your relative's file was burned, reapply. To Request Files from the FBI: http://members.aol.com/rechtman/www/fbi.html By letter, include full name of the person, file you need, DOB, date of death, place of birth. Need to send a photocopy of proof of death. This can be ANY of the following: newspaper obituary, citation from Who Was Who in America, death certificate, biographical reference, encyclopedia or magazine article on the person, or your simple statement that the person was born over 110 years ago. If the latter is the case, then the FBI doesn't require written proof of death because they assume anyone over 110 is probably deceased. But you'll still need the birth date. You need to include a statement that says *I agree to pay reasonable fees associated with this request up to $25. Please notify me if it is expected to exceed this amount.* Note FBI request[s] will probably not cost anything because you receive the first 100 pages at no cost if you are an individual, noncommercial requester. Need to tell them to search their manual card records in addition because the person lived before 1956. The computer files only index back to 1956. They only search the computer files unless you tell them to do otherwise.
