Jeremy Francis Gilmer, 1818-1883, was a native of Guilford Co. and was a West Point graduate and Chief of the Confederate Engineer Bureau. The purpose of the map, showing details east of the W&W Railroad was for the Army's use in defending said RR against the depredations of the Federals coming from the coastal areas which were under the control of the invading army. There is a book, published by the NC Dept. of Archives and History entitled The Formation of the North Carolina Counties 1663-1943 by David Leroy Corbett. The copy I have, a third printing of 1975 cost $9.00 from the shop in the Museum of History in Raleigh when I bought it several years ago. You might be interested in it. The purpose of the revision in the Wilson-Wayne County line in 1859 was to "leave the dwelling house of said (Jacob) Hooks in the county of Wayne". While I am not researching the Hooks family, there were several of them who married into the Bass family and if you are pursuing same, I would be glad to share informatiom. Probably the oldest Hooks name I have is Cullen Hooks, who was born about 1800. Al Bass Raleigh

In the History of Stantonsburg are listed several maps: Collet Map--1770 shows only one road thru this area from Tarboro to points south and over to Smithfield and Waynesboro (Goldsboro) Colton Map--1861 Shows one road to Goldsboro from Tarboro with a branch to Snow Hill US.Coast Survey Map...1865 Shows a road from Tarboro to Saratoga to Stantonsburg to Goldsboro with a branch to Snow Hill and Kinston and a road from Joyner's Depot (Elm City) to Stantonsburg to Kinston and roughly follows present day Hwy 222. Kerr - Cain Map 1882 Post Route Map 1896 I know I have seen at least 3 of these maps in the NC Archives and I suspect the others are there also. I do have a copy of the Gilmer Map done during the War Between the States but the western most boundary on that map seem to follow the railroad from Goldsboro to Rocky Mount.. Carol .. Carol P. Hello Wilson County, North Carolina researchers, I am Carol Pridgen Martoccia and I am the list manager for the Rootsweb supported NCWilson list. I believe in Rootsweb and all that the fine administrative staff of Rootsweb are doing to further family research. Rootsweb mailing lists comprise 95% of the genealogy lists on the internet. The goal of this mailing list is to maintain a friendly environment for those of you who are researching Wilson County, North Carolina. This list is to be a forum for genealogy and related subjects. As for my qualifications as a listmanager for this particular locality list, they are: I was born and reared in Wilson County. My family moved to Edgecombe County in 1958 but my roots are deep in Wilson County. My sister, my aunt, and almost all of my cousins remain in Wilson. I have been doing full time genealogy research for over 10 years. I maintain a very LARGE personal genealogy library and I live directly across the street from East Carolina University and all that it has to offer. Although my educational background is not a requirement for being a list manager, I do hold a Master's degree. I do NOT profess to know all that there is to know about all the families or even about the history of Wilson County. That is not necessary as a list manager. My goal is to have you ask the questions and for others of you to answer the questions. I will not answer each and every query. If I don't know the answer, I hope that someone on the list does know the answer and will feel free to enlighten ALL of us. I do not want this list to be an unfriendly place. If you have a problem then you should contact me personally at [email protected] If you have Bibles, Wills, Deeds, Military Records, Census Records, or anything else that you feel should be on the internet, then please contact me and we will make sure that they get into the Wilson County Archives of the NCGenWebsite. Genealogy is a fun hobby. We can each uphold a professional standard and respect one another. Now, all of you, start the questions and post your lineages and answer those queries if you know the answer. If you find an interesting topic or a relevant url site, post it. This is YOUR list. USE IT! Thank you. Carol .. Carol P. Martoccia .. 903 East Fifth Street .. Greenville, NC 27858 .. Pridgen Home Page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/6297 .. I've always been fascinated about the description of the lines of Wilson County when it was formed in 1855. There must have been some controversy because in 1859 there was a clarifying act which slightly changed the lower line of the county. It is this section that interests me as I research the Ruffin family. "thence a direct line to a large pine near the mouth of Jacob Hook's lane, north of Jacob Hook's dwelling, thence a direct line to Ruffin's Bridge". If I am interpreting the changing law correctly, Hook's house was originally left in Wayne County, and the revision allowed it to become Wilson County. The RUFFIN bridge is my main interest. It sounds like it was located right at the point of where Wilson, Wayne and Greene Counties meet. It states "from said Ruffin's bridge down Contentnea creek to the Greene County line: Can anyone help me with this location? Don't suppose anyone on this list is also researching the Jacob Hook's family? I'm interested because they must have been neighbors of my Ruffin group! Prior to 1855, what county would this "corner" have been in. Thanks for your help! Virginia
Carol~For some time now I have been enjoying your work with this list and have learned a lot from the extras you send us. Thank you very much! Lila
Group, I was at the NGS Conference in Richmond and I met most of the Rootsweb staff--Karen, Tim, his baby, Dianne (from the help desk)...I didn't meet DR.B because he had to fly back to Ca. but I was impressed by the whole Rootsweb Staff. They were very friendly, sincere, and I saw nothing wrong with their personal appearance. Tim is a young man with longish hair, but then so what! I am very grateful to Rootsweb for all that they do to foster SHARING of genealogical information. I believe that most of us have gained from being a part of the Rootsweb family. I had no idea that there was another NCWilson list --I also was very sorry to hear that I am called..."an individual purporting to represent a county". I do not believe I have ever represented myself as as such...I am a native Wilson Countian. I live only 40 minutes away in Greenville, NC. I have tried my best to make this list a place for people to post queries about family connections, to post their Bibles, Wills, or anything else that they want which deals with family research or researching in Wilson County in particular. I really do not want this list to become a name-calling arena, but I do ask for your support in making this a dynamic forum for genealogy. Thank you. Carol PRIDGEN Martoccia--your list manager .. Henry Just want to say that I think your comments about the rootsweb people are sick. Who are you to pass judgement on others this way? I do not know who you talked with but the Rootsweb people have given us all a tool that has no equal and cost a lot of money to maintain. What do you do to help Genealogy or anything else? how do you dress? Maybe we can be judgemental with you. I think you owe the list and Rootsweb an apology. Just one persons opinion. Frankly I don't have a clue what is going on as the number of queries has continued to come in at a good rate. I am asking Horace Peele, the group "master" to look into the possibility that there might be a block somewhere that is keeping information from reaching all members. When Sue and I were in Richmond at the NGS conference I had a chat with the Rootsweb folks about allowing a site to be issued to an individual purporting to represent a county. They seemed indifferent to the questions and didn't seem to care. Their main interest was mostly in the donations and grants they receive from list owners. Strange bunch. Shapeless clothing, unkempt hair, but no love beads or funny pipes on strings around their necks. Deja vu .. the 60's with a difference. My dear friend Virginia Crilley is more than happy to post your documents to the Archives of the Wilson County GenWeb site. See her message below. Thanks Virginia. Hunter and Carol, (Carol please post this to the Wilson List for me!) I would be very happy to post on-line any deeds/wills, etc that you have dealing with Wilson County. What alot of people don't understand is that there are TWO parts to the USGenWeb....the County Pages and the Archive Pages. On the Archives page for Wilson County, I am the file manager, and I put on-line anything that someone sends to me. Usually these are "primary" documents and can be very, very helpful to other researchers. The archives is in .txt format which is different from the HTML coding that the County pages use. Take a look at what is already there, and if you have any questions, just ask me. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/wilson.htm It is usually easier for me if you just include them in an e-mail, as I sometimes have trouble opening up attachments....depending on what program you used to type them in. Thanks for raising this question... Virginia
Thank you so much, Carol. I was at wits end trying to figure out how to find out without going to N.C. myself. I really appreciate your help. Does anyone besides the Genealogical Society have access to Orphan Bonds and Guardianship bonds and apprentice bonds for the late 1840's? I'm searching for the disposition of a child in 1845-1849 by the name of William Henry Harrison Whitley, born 14 Feb 1838 somewhere in North Carolina. He is on the 1860 federal census as single in the Black Creek district of Wilson Co. I am trying to reconstruct his childhood as he lost both parents at an early age. He entered the Civil War in Black Creek N.C. in 1862. Prior to the war he married and his wife died in childbirth with twin girls. I am searching for the names of his parents and his first wife. So far, no luck. Any help will be appreciated!
Henry, Is there a problem with Rootsweb? Since I've been subscribed to this list, I've always wondered why there is this list in addition to the NCWILSON list at Rootsweb. I don't understand what you mean about "an individual purporting to represent a county". Have I missed something somewhere? I'd also like to ask why the Wilson County Genweb site does not have a place to post wills, deeds, queries, bible records, cemetery records, etc. I've seen a lot of other county sites in NC and other states that have incorporated these on their pages successfully. It's a great way to trade information. As far as "Their main interest was mostly in the donations and grants they receive from list owners", Rootsweb is a non-profit organization if I'm not mistaken. If they are to continue to provide what I think is an excellent service to genealogists, they should be concerned about donations. Isn't the Wilson County Genealogical Society, as a non-profit organization, concerned about its dues and the money received from the sale of its publications?
