Thanks, Linda http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Appalachian_Heritage/ Thomas disappeared while taking a trip in January, 1926 to Alert, near Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina. He was carrying cash and gifts to family members in Orange County, I was told by Clara Hinchey Harless that James Calvin, her father, said that "Jeff" was taking presents to one of his sisters... He took train and when he got close he hitched a ride with a man... when he got near where he needed to be dropped off he got out and offered the kind man $5 for his trouble. This was a large amount of money in those days... she said there were two men sitting outside the store where he was dropped off and they must have noticed that he was carring large amounts of cash and money. He disappeared and in a few weeks after a large search they found his clothes scattered in a large area along with his suitcase and ultimately found his body at the bottom of a well.
