    1. [NCWILKES] Mathew Cox, Jr.
    2. "Blue Ridge Heritage."by Dorothy Burnett Peterson has Mathew Cox, Jr. listed as the son of Mathew and Lucy Dickenson Cox. (P. 144), she also has his birthdate as 1773 and follows this by saying something that I have not heard, "Matthew Cox, b. 1773 1st Married Mary Bishop. b. ca 1784, d/o John Bishop, Dutch settler, & 2nd Wife Frances Simpkins. Mary died abt. 1817, leaving Matthew with 9 children to raise. Matthew married 2nd on 10/15/1822, Margaret Sherrill, b. 7/22/1774, d/o Wm Sherrill & Isabella Lawrence. In 1824 he sold his farm on Beaver Creek & bought more land in the western part of Montgomery Co. VA He later moved to Burke Co., NC (now SE corner of Caldwell Co) In the area where his parents have moved. (Reference: Ambrose N. Cox Descendants 1722-1792)by Elza B. Cox) She goes on to list the 9 children of Matthew & Mary Bishop all born in Montgomery County. I am questioning the birth date of 1773 because it does not agree with any census information. I know the census could be wrong. I am also questioning the second marriage. Can anyone add information to this? Thanks. Kasia **************Gas prices getting you down? 3. Kasia, I have not seen either of the books you list, but I have seen many family listings for Matthew I, Matthew II/Sr., and Matthew III/Jr. families. In them Matthew III/Jr. has been listed equally as born in 1773 and 1786. His marriages are as equally divided as to who he married first, Mary Bishop or Margaret Sherrill. I doubt we may ever know for sure.
