Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: George Franklin McNeil, 71 Route 1, Ferguson, was fatally injured when a farm tractor rolled back and pinned him between a tree and one of the tires about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday 17 miles west of Wilkesboro. Mr. McNiel had been using the tractor in his garden behind the house. Deputy Sheriff Frank Earp said that Mr. McNiel had apparently gotton off the tractor to make an adjustment when the machine rolled back and pinned him. Coroner Eugene Wood said that Mr. McNiel died at the scene. Wilkes Rescue Squad responded and moved the tractor from him. Deputy Earp said he found one gear of the tractor in reverse and another in neutral. Mr. McNeil's farm is located on the Elk road between Mount Pleasant road and Elk Creek road. George Franklin McNiel was born in Wilkes County Jan. 12, 1905 son of Edgar H. and Annie Barlow McNiel. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Parlee Triplett McNiel; eight daughters, Mrs. E. C. Eller Jr., Mrs. J. T. Marley, Mrs. Vilas Church, Mrs. W. E. Holland and Mrs. Steve Hamby, all of Fergusion, Mrs C. A. Johnson of Lenoir, Mrs. B. L. Hyatt of Waynesville and Mrs. Vilas Payne of Wilkesboro; six sons, Kenneth L. McNeil of Akron, Ohio, Thomas and Ike McNiel of Ferguson, Andrew McNeil of Duluth, Ga., Charles H McNeil and Henry McNeil of Lenoir; five sisters, Mrs. Ida Mahaffey of Wilkesboro, Mrs. Belva Walsh of Lenoir, Mrs. Grace Wolfe, Mrs. Esther Wolfe and Mrs. Travis Blankenship, all of Fergusion; three brothers, Robert G. McNeil of Lenoir, Edgar H. and T. W. McNeil of Ferguson; 32 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral service was conducted today at Elk Baptist Church by the Rev. James Weaver and the Rev.
