    3. I have to agree with Pam about Mary not being a nickname for Martha. I have "tons" of Marys in my tree, and quite a few Martha's, but never were the names interchangable. Another name problem I ran into quite frequently was the tendency of the mountain folk to change the pronounciation of the first name. I had a great Aunt Anna, who was always called "Anner", and I was well into my twenties before I ever learned that her name was actually Anna! I have also found names ending in "A" to be pronounced as though they ended in "IE". For example, my grandmother Zora was always called "Zorie". Many times the surviving relatives only know that ancestor by their "nickname", which really makes for difficult tracing. I also love it when the men are called Buck or Chief or some other nondescript nickname. It took me a very long time to find out who Buck Church was, and he was one of my grandmother's cousins. lol Barbara Pam Stone <pamstone@cfl.rr.com> wrote: Hi, all, Just thought I'd point out that I have not found Mary at all as a nickname for Martha, but have often found Patsy/Patsie to be a nickname for Martha, and very often Polly as a nickname for Mary. And on several different occasions, I have found Nannie to have been another nickname for Mary, and Sookey/Sookie to have been another nickname for Sarah. Hope this helps someone---these old nicknames can be really confusing when you find someone formally listed by their given name in one document, and then referred to by another name in another document or documents. To: NCWILKES-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" My g-g-g-g grandfather was Adam Jacob Staley. According to local stories, he died by drowning in the Yadkin/Reddies River in May 1812. I have not been able to find a death record or anything to corroborate this. Is there still a newspaper on microfiche maybe that may have announced his death. His wife, Eve, divorced him 1803 (one of the few divorces ever granted) and took all the property that he lived on with her. I don't know if he continued to live in Wilkes after the divorce but he is said to have remarried but possibly not in Wilkes. I am fairly certain of his death information because of the various people I received the exact same info from. Is there any way to validate this info???? What records are still left that would help? Thanks, Jimmie Staley ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2007 21:19:40 -0000 From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] Underwood Family To: Message-ID: <1167686381.17011@rootsweb.com> Content-Type: text/plain; This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I am still concentrated on Surry/sussex Co. VA. for my Lewis. I have not been able to connect to the Wilkes co. NC Underwood's, It would be ral interesting if we had a male descendant of that line that would be interested in doing a DNA test. that would confirm if our lines are connected.
