We believe he was named after the famous British preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon. My grandfather was borned in 1892, the year the famous preacher died. He actually used the name of "Spurgeon Brown" when signing legal documents. My grandfather was borned in Wilkes County, NC. My grandfather's grandmother was named Mary Brown (born abt 1832). My grandfather also had an aunt named Mary Jane Brown, who was borned in 1864. We believe Mary Brown's maiden name most likely was Fletcher. Because of the middle initial of "A" in your Mary Brown, this leads me to think this may not be the same Mary Brown as you are looking for. Wilkes County seems to have alot of Browns. There is a small community I believed, called Spurgeon, NC (zipcode 28659) and I believe it is in Wilkes County (North of North Wilkesboro). I think your Spurgeon most likely refers to a place (community) and not a person. I do not live near Wilkes County but if you ever have an opportunity to visit the Public Library in North Wilkesboro, NC they have an great Genealogy section with all types of books. I have been there once and found a good book listing the brides by maiden name going back into the 1800s. Sorry I could not have been more help. If I run across a Mary A. Brown, I will follow-up. I am researching my family of Browns in Wilkes and may run across it. Good Luck in your search.
