Joshua Pennell was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Judd Pennell. When he died he requested that his slaves be freed and taken to a emanciapted place in the west his Nephew who was a Winkler honored these wishes. Frm the 1860 census of Kansas and the 1850 slave shedule of Wilkes Nc it appears that the eldest slave was a Matriarch named Nancy and the rest were her offspring . I believe Nancy was a gift to Joshua by his Judd Grandfather and I also belive Joshua may have been the Father of her Offspring, Can anyone confirm how Joshua Pennell came to own his slaves???
