Hi, all, Some time ago, I wrote to the Harris list that I was suspecting that PERHAPS our Silas Harris [b. 1775, VA; d. aft. 1850, Surry Co., NC] might NOT have been the son of William Harris [b. 1752, Culpeper, VA; d. 1848, Wilkes Co., NC], but might rather have been the son of Dabney Harris [who was the eldest son of Christopher Harris, who died 1794 in Madison Co., KY, and the grandson of Robert Harris, the Louisa Co., VA surveyor---from the "rich end" of this particular Harris family.] [The DNA of our William Harris matches to that of the Robert Harris of Ware Creek line of Hanover Co., VA, so it is easy to get confused---this line is not yet clearly-documented through most of its branches, for sure...] Recently-discovered information concerning the placement of this PARTICULAR William Harris have revealed a movement pattern that much more strongly suggests that our Silas WAS indeed the son of William & Sarah [who were only in that portion of Surry County that later became Stokes for a year {or part of it}---1786. This brief period places William Harris in the same area as the FRANKLIN & LEWIS families that William's eldest son, Silas later married into. They were neighbors when our Silas Harris was only eleven.] By July of 1787, our William & Sarah were in Wilkes Co., and remained there until about 1797, when they moved to Ashe Co. and patented some land there. William & Sarah returned again to Wilkes Co. about 1813, having never sold their, and patented more land adjacent the old Harris tract. Sarah Harris died before 1830, and our William died there in 1848.] The major question we are trying to understand, at this point, is exactly WHY they moved to Ashe Co.? [Clearly this was a movement that seems to us to have been motivated by some unidentified family ties?] Otherwise, why would our William & Sarah move to a place almost at the Tennessee state line, when they clearly held on to their Wilkes land, and intended to move back to it during their old age? I am absolutely convinced now that our William Harris and Sarah [unknown] Harris of Culpeper, VA & Surry/Wilkes/Ashe/Wilkes Cos., NC was the father of our Silas Harris of Surry Co.
