Dear group; I'm trying to finish my late mother's family history. I've been working on it over 40 years now and I'm not getting younger, wealthier or more energetic, I find. Her paternal grandmother was Mariam Adaline Walker b. April, 1850 in Buchanan Co., MO, married James F. Wallace April, 1866, in Nodaway County. James' father and her father had been partners in a couple of general stores together. James was wounded in the Civil War (union) and never really recovered. He was left with a permanent septic infection that slowly killed him. He died in 1899 in Texas Co., MO where he had gone in hope of either a cure or at least longer life. Mariam had only two brothers. Her parents only had three children--ever. Both were born in North Carolina. They were James Lindolph Walker b. 1841 and William M. Walker b. 1844--d. 1923 (Nodaway County). James Lindolph Walker was in the CSA and killed in the siege of Vicksburg. He was fatally wounded about July 1, and died July 3, 1863 and is buried at Vicksburg. William was also in the CSA but made it home intact. Their father was William Dale/Daly Walker b. 1821/22 in North Carolina. He often went by the name of "Dale" or "Daly" Walker. He was captured by the Union army while trying to bring clothing and food to his sons and sent to a Union army prison at Alton, Illinois "for providing aid and comfort to the enemy." He died of pneumonia, there in December, 1864 and is buried there. William Dale/Daly Walker appears to have had at least three brothers: George M. Walker b. 1820/21; Barry Walker b. 1812/13 and James Walker b. 1818/19 who married Mary Hester. All of the four had first born sons named "James" which means the father of William, George, Barry and James was probably another James Walker. Three of them also named an older or oldest daughter "Adaline." I believe this family is descended from Daly Walker Sr. who took land in Burke County in 1778. He was apparently a brother of Renelder Walker who with his widowed mother, Elizabeth, sold lands and left Frederick County, Maryland and "moved to North Carolina" (according to one of the land sale records). On November 27, 1778, Renelder Walker married Mary Wilcoxson and his bondsmen were Charles and Daly Walker. This Daly Walker married Hannah Smith of Burke County, also the same day as Renelder's marriage. On the 1790 census, Daly Walker Sr. was listed as Dailey Walker and living in the 8th company roster area next to Nicholas Jones. In his household at that time were 1 son under 16, and two males (himself included) over 16 and 5 females (wife and four daughters?) In 1796, however, Daly Walker, Johanna Walker and Martha Walker witnessed the will of William Careley Sr. in Wilkes County. Who were the children of Daly Walker and Hannah (aka Johanna) Wilcoxson, and what were their birthdates or birth years? We know that Daly Walker Sr. and his wife Hannah had a son Daly Walker Jr. who lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina in the early 1800's. Who were the children of Daly Walker Jr.? What were their birthdates or birth years and who did they marry? Who was the wife of Daly Walker Jr? I don't believe my Walkers were sons of Daly Walker Jr. because on the 1820 census he had moved to Wythe County, VA and had NO sons only two daughters under age 10. Actually they were 3 years old or less. He married Drusilla Epps 23 August, 1817 in Knox County, KY. Sons of Renelder Walker had moved to Knox Co., Kentucky according to some of that family's records. However, knowing more about Daly Walker and others of this family may lead me to his brothers and eventually to my William Daly Walker. It looks like Daly Walker Jr. was just about 26-27 on the 1820 census suggesting a birth year in the range of 1792-93. From other transcribed and published records it looks like Daly Walker Jr. eventually had one son, Isaac and his oldest daughter was Mary "Polly" Walker b. 1818 who married George Clapp. Is there a connection of either Daly Walker (Sr. or Jr. or both) to the James Walker who married Audree Maxwill (Maxwell) on January 19, 1793 in Wilkes County? Is this the same James Walker who four years later married Nancy Bradley in Wilkes County on February 11, 1797. My William M. Walker had relatives--uncles, cousins or brothers--who lived in Kentucky in Warren or Butler County. He met his wife, Nancy Ann Porter Fortner b. June, 1820, KY, there and apparently married her there. Her brother, James Porter Fortner was described in the Kentucky biographies written about 120 years ago. The Fortners were originally from North Carolina also. However, AFTER THE MARRIAGE MY WILLIAM WALKER RETURNED TO NORTH CAROLINA WITH HIS WIFE. He was apparently living with his father in the 1840's. Both of William's sons were born in North Carolina. I believe his father then died in 1848 or 1849, which allowed him to pack up and move to northwestern Missouri, where he apparently already had brothers. Does this seem familiar to anyone? Does anyone have additional records of the Wilkes County, NC Walkers that might lead me to my William Daly Walker? Sincerely, Mrs. Cecilia L.
