    3. Jimmie, Do you have an address or phone number for George McNiel? I'd like to contact him about an old church cemetery where the church location was moved. Thanks! I too have family from that time frame in Wilkes and have found that most people buried family on family land. There weren't any centralized cemeteries to speak of at the time. Families were buried on family land and there are a ton of these private cemeteries on property in the county. I was able to find the present owner of the property my family used to own but that may not be that easy. You should call or write George McNiel of Wilkesboro. He is an elderly gentleman that cataloged all the cemeteries in the county, private and public. He is an excellent source and a very nice man. He's even given me GPS coordinates to find graves. Also, he notates family relations. Wilkes is a close knit community and any family around for a while is known to most of the older groups as well as there background. Look him up...he's great.
